Asur Tribe , East India
Jharkhand state is rightly enriched by the presence of Asur tribes, who are also being found in other Indian provinces.

Quite a handful of tribes took shelter in the nook of central India. Asur is one of the ancient most tribes that are thriving in this region as well as in the whole of Indian subcontinent. Infact , these ancient Asur tribes mainly throng the state of Jharkhand The Asur are also one of the primeval tribal groups here. Several Asur tribes mainly can be seen in the districts of Gumla, Lohardaga, Palamau and Latehar of the newly created Jharkhand state. Apart from Jharkhand state, in other states, Asur tribes are found in states like Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra.

By profession , Asur tribes did the arduous jobs of iron smelting. However, presently, few amongst the Asur tribal community have chosen several other professions also. Some also have taken the task of producing beautiful metal works. Wonderful metal works are their specialty and these antic pieces that they have produced are in great demand, as many people prefer to buy them gifts, souvenirs and mementos. There are also few Asur tribes found in central India , who have still today stick to their age old practices of hunting , gathering animals and also `shifting cultivation`. After a thorough survey and research work, several anthropologists have came to an unanimous decision of segregating the whole population of asur tribes into three sub groups , namely, three sub-tribal divisions, namely Bir(Kol) Asur, Birjia Asur and Agaria Asur. Music, festival, jovial feasts are part and parcel of the daily life of Asur tribes.

To save these ancient tribes to go in to oblivion, initiatives are being taken by the State Government. Also few NGOs, social organizations too are trying best to preserve these Asur tribes in their antiquity.
