Administration of Laksmikanta Roy Choudhury Laksmikanta Roy Choudhury remained the administrator of his jaigir from 1608-149 till his death. Within this time Laksmikanta with his indomitable energy and wisdom developed the land into a highly civilized society with all sorts of infrastructural and economical development. Development of Sutanuti Laksmikanta Roy Choudhury developed Sutaluti or Sutanuti into an international trading post through which the Portuguese East India Company, the Dutch East India Company, and the Armenians used to trade mostly of cotton yarn and other commodities, before British East India Company. He built the first metallic road from Halisahar to Barisha and a two storied Kuchery Bari (office building) in Kalikata, the exact place where the Writer's Building stands today. Introduction of Bengali Durga Puja Laksmikanta Roy Choudhury introduced the very first Saparivara Durga Puja in autumn at Barisha in 1610. Laksmikanta Roy Choudhury also fought with Devibara, the head of the Hindu Samaj and banned polygamy in his dominion. Laksmikanta Roy Choudhury was undoubtedly the first social reformer of Kolkata. He donated 595 bighas of land to Mother Goddess of Kalighat and developed the place into a great pilgrimage site. As the results of hard strenuous work spread over half a 15th to 16th century, Laksmikanta Roy Choudhury managed to raise the comparatively small income of his landed properties to something over twelve lakhs of rupees per annum. He was recognised as one of the greatest Bhumiyas of Bengal and was loved and honoured by the people of Barisha in modern Behala to Halisahar in modern North 24 Parganas District of West Bengal.
