Objective of Allahabad Public Library Allahabad Public Library tries attempts to identify community needs for providing document materials to required information needs of library users with valuable information that may be required for research or any other enquiry that depends upon records rather than upon experience. The library also promotes reading habit among children, students and youth and support study needs of young people by developing individual’s capacity to engage in lifelong learning. The library promotes and encourages reading across generation to generation with sustainability to community, identity and confidence. History of Allahabad Public Library Allahabad Public Library is also known as Thornhill Mayne Memorial and is situated at Alfred Park. Establishment of Allahabad Public Library Allahabad Public Library was established in the year 1864. It is the biggest library in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Allahabad Public Library was designed by Richard Roskell Bayne is a remarkable example of Scottish Baronial architecture. The monument has served as the house of legislative assembly in British era when Allahabad was the capital of United Provinces. In 1879, the Public library was shifted to the present premises at Alfred Park which is now Chandrasekhar Azad Park. Collection of Allahabad Public Library Allahabad Public Library has an approximate collection of 125,000 books, 40 types of magazines and 28 different newspapers in Hindi langauge, English, Urdu and Bengali and contains 21 Arabic manuscripts. Allahabad Public Library also has a collection of old government publications, parliamentary papers, and blue books of the 19th century, old manuscripts and journals. Architecture of Allahabad Public Library Allahabad Public Library was designed by Richard Roskell Bayne in Scottish Baronial architecture with sharp pillars and turrets of granite and sandstone. Allahabad Public Library represents structural polychromy with lofty towers and arcaded cloisters. When completed in 1870, Allahabad Public Library cost approx. Rs.94,222. It was funded by Commissioner of Allahabad, Mr. Mayne and was opened as a memorial to Cuthbert Bensley Thornhill. |
