Anna Memorial was remodelled between the period of 1996 and 1998 during the reign of DMK at a cost of 27.5 million. An elegant design of 'Rising Sun', which is the symbol of the DMK party, was present at the entrance arch. However after the AIADMK party returned to power in the year 2001, this design was removed. The monument was renovated and this resulted in the original tusk-shaped entrance arch which leads to a highly polished marble tiled structure along with widened pathways and a building comprising decorated octagonal mantapams. Anna Memorial suffered much damage after the Indian Ocean tsunami which struck the coastal parts of Tamil Nadu in December 2004. Along with the memorial, some other structures standing on the seashore also got affected. However repair works were also undertaken after this. In the year 2012, the memorial was renovated with an amount of 12 million. There is also a museum on Annadurai in Anna Memorial. This article is a stub.
