and appointed by the President of India. She is a veteran Indian politician
and the Former Cabinet Minister in the Government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Sumitra Mahajan was born on 12th April 1943. She is hailing from Chiplun, Maharashtra
. Her father's name was Purushotam Sathe and Usha. She began her formal education from the district school and later she earned her post graduation from Indore
University in Law. Indore University is now named as Devi Ahilya University
Political Career of Sumitra Mahajan
In 2014, she won the 16th Lok Sabha
Elections for the eighth time. She is referred as the longest-serving woman member in Lok Sabha. She has been representing the Indore constituency of Madhya Pradesh
Sumitra Mahajan is a former Union Minister of State of India. She was appointed as the Cabinet Minister of Human Resources, Communications and Petroleum from 2002 to 2004 under the Prime Minister-ship of Atal Bihari Vajpayee
in the National Democratic Alliance led Government.
Sumitra Mahajan is contested and won first time Lok Sabha Elections in 1989, against former Chief Minister and senior Indian National Congress leader Prakash Chandra Sethi. Sumitra Mahajan has brought many developmental projects for Indore from Railways, Aviation, Urban Development Ministry.
Sumitra Mahajan is best known face in Indian national political scenario for her politeness, simplicity, honesty and clean political diplomacy in national and domestic arena.
Sumitra Mahajan has a clean track record and has always maintained distances from special interest groups and pressure groups of India. She is popularly known as Tai which means sister in local dialect among people of her constituency.
Sumitra Mahajan won the elections to the 16th Lok Sabha, conducted by Election Commission of India with a margin of 4,66,301 votes. Sumitra Mahajan polled 8, 54,372 votes while Satyanarayan Patel, a candidate from Indian National Congress
party polled 3,88,071 votes.
On 6 June 2014, Sumitra Mahajan was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha. She had earlier worked as an associate of the 'Panel of Chairmen' in the Lok Sabha.
