Sajid Khan

Sajid KhanSajid Khan, the alternative entertainer of the television industry needs no introduction. He is armed with an abrasive sense of humor and can destroy reputations with a smile and a tongue firmly in the cheek. The great entertainer has already built a steady fan following that hangs on every word and every nuance of his talking head. He is a striking persona both on and off the screen. Both in public life and on screen he wears the weirdest of wigs and mocks every single celebrity from Amitabh Bachhan to Mallika Sherawat. He draws the inspiration for his shows from Eddie Murphy and defines his style of humnor as "sharp tongue and below the belt, at times". He also draws the manner of interaction and spontaneity from Murphy.

Sajid Khan always had the urge in him to direct a film. He has also direct a small portion in the Ram Gopal Varma`s venture Darna Zaroori Hai. But he makes his directorial debut with the out-and-out comedy Heyy Baby. He calls it the first `baby comedy` of India. His entire cast comprised of people who have never worked with each other. Even the music director trio Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy has never composed the music for any of these actors. Budgeted at a massive amount of Rs.40 crores much has been spent on visual effects by using a new technology called Motion Capture. Nick Nickolai from Sydney who has earlier worked on movies like the Matrix, Babe and Power Rangers, will be working on this film. Sajid has also conducted two test shoots for the film and will be conducting one more in New Zealand. Although this is the `dream debut` of Sajid Khan he considers it as his homage to his lifelong passion, that is, movies. He owes a lot to his sister choreographer-turned-filmmaker Farah Khan and says that he shares the passion of films only with his sister. He also adds that Farah is the reason behind the man that he is today. He never pursued acting but he has always been comfortable staging the odd act. He never wanted to be typecast. He does not want to be remembered as the character that he once played by as Sajid Khan the man in all the roles. Here lie the difference in his perspective and it is this thing, which makes him different from others. According to the great entertainer Sajid Khan, the basic criteria requires to succeed as a standup comedian is at least one USP, he claims that the people has to like his eyes, his smile, his voice or his style. He considers that his USP is his interactive nature, which also helps him not to stick to the same, old clich้ humor. He always tries to experiment and gives up his best to dish out something new and hopes that it stays that way throughout. He has this unique ability to make people laugh but also keeps in mind the taste of different classes and sections of people. He considers that one section might prefer vulgar jokes while the other section might show an inclination towards wry and subtle ones. So while making the audience laugh he has to keep on experimenting to scale new heights. He is also of the firm belief that anybody who claims that he has prepared an entire standup comedy show, complete with a bound script beforehand is a fool because the act of making the audience laugh is like facing a boxer whom one has never boxed against. Always some new sparks has to be added to keep the show going. Sometimes the audience might not respond to his puns but then he always prefers to keep a huge stock of these one-liners stored in his memory to break the monotony now and then. He also makes an attempt to find the pulse of the audience in the first instant. When he goes for shows abroad he just does not stands up and rattles jokes, instead he interacts with the audience and involves them too. Another important trait of a comedian is that he should be able to laugh himself as well. According to him making people laugh is an art and one should make his point by not offending his target. He also disagrees on the choice of the topic to aim his jokes at. One staying in the Indian subcontinent cannot joke about politics, religion and sex. He claims ultimately there not enough of room left for playing a pun.
Hey Baby
In his personal life he comes as a very serious man. He claims that he has come to this industry to entertain people and make money and not to hog publicity. In fact it was the need to earn a living that made him turn his hobby into profession. When he is asked about marriage he remarks that he is 36 and happy to be single. He broke off with many girlfriends because of disagreement over films. He also remarked in a recent interview that he is a self-indulgent human being and only wishes to settle down if he gets someone who understands him or else he won`t. By the tender age of 15 he felt that it was necessary for him to earn a living and so he made a career out of his favorite pastime. He sometimes gets nostalgic when he recalls his first brush with showbiz. On the New Year`s Eve of 1986 he got his first salary of his first job, that is a mere amount of 100 bucks for hosting his first show. The career of Sajid Khan kicked off when the satellite television was just making its way into the Indian subcontinent. Although his first show Main Bhi Detective however was a big flop and could not make any impact on the audience. When he is asked about that show he re maked that the term `disaster` would be an understatement for the show. All the critics of that time declared the television to banned not only his show but also his total individuality. But the turning point of his career came with a call from Kailash Gandhi asking him to host the music countdown show Ikke Pe Ikka, which was first aired on Zee Cinema in the year 1995. In fact this show made its entry into the Guiness Book of Records as the longest running countdown show that has ever been aired on television. But the critics always kept on reminding the people that he was a guy who accepted a disaster Main Bhi Detective and rejected a blockbuster like Antakshari. But he has own particular reasons for that he wanted to establish his own identity. When he offered to host the chartbuster show `Antaakshari` he immediately realized that the show is an outright winner with the fantastic conceptualization, great strategy and lavish sets. The pressuring of doing justice to such a show was looming large on him so he decided to back off from the show. After the resounding success of `Ikke Pe Ikka` followed by another hit show Kehne Mein Kya Harz Hai he shot to the limelight. Following that his third show Sajid No.1 did not do well with the audience because it was a show based on plenty of bedroom humor. The audience was expecting another spoof and could not take in the English jokes involving a lot of pun. The language was also a barrier and the title of the show irked the host of the show as well. Then he appeared in a small role in the movie Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate. After that he also stopped acting in the movies, as the offers that were showered on him were horrendous. At that time he preferred to stick to his `standup comedy`.

Despite being so successful Sajid Khan has a negative aura around him because he is straightforward and likes to call a spade a spade and nothing else and often comes across as brash and arrogant. He often used to get hate mails regarding this straightforward nature of his. But with time people have tried to accept him the way he is. He takes up a show not based on high factors. He would ready to be a part of the show of a man with whom he does not share a long interaction and communication process. He prefers to be a Survivor rather than a Super Star. The humor in Indian Television is quite weepy and has lots of inhibitions. Among the great comedians he idolizes Groucho Marx, then Kishore Kumar and the third in the list is Kader Khan. Starting with just a meager sum of Rs.100 Sajid Khan has now Rs.40 crore riding on his directorial debut. He has now become even more confident and has an even bigger summer blockbuster lined up next. He has moved a long way in destroying each and every type of criticism aimed at him. This extremely talented persona has crossed many milestones to reach where he is today. Known as the sharp-tongued funny man on television he has now grown up to be a director. He is a genius in every respect and his fans sincerely hope that he will reach the summit of his career in the near future.
