
S Jaipal Reddy, in political circles, is known as one who is always prepared to answer a question. Over the years S. Jaipal Reddy`s personality has been accomplished as the spokesman of the Janata Dal, the United Front and the Third Front and he surpassed in the task. "Jaipal as parliamentarian" has made a mark in
Parliament, as it is by and large believed that when Jaipal raises an issue, alarm bells start ringing in treasury benches. He does his homework well, which is a good reason why he was singled out to be spokesman.
Shri jaipal Sudini Reddy was born on 16th January 1942 to father Late Shri Durga Reddy and mother Yashodamma in Madgul village,
Andhra Pradesh. He is married to Lakshmi and the couple has 2 sons and 1 daughter. He has an M.A in English and Bachelor of Journalism Educated at Osmania University,
Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh). Jaipal started his political career with the Congress and in the late sixties; he headed the Youth Congress unit of Andhra Pradesh. In 1969, he became Andhra PCC General Secretary and held the office for three years.

He was an MLA of Andhra Pradesh for four times in between 1969 and 1984. To protest against the emergency, he quit the Congress Party and joined the Janata Party in 1977. In the 1980
Lok Sabha election, he contested against Indira Gandhi from Medak. From 1985 to 1988, he was the general secretary of the Janata Party. He was selected to the Lok Sabha four times: the 8th Lok Sabha in 1984 (in alliance with TDP), the 12th in 1998 (again as ally of TDP), the 13th in 1999 (as a member of the Congress Party) and the 14th in 2004 (as a member of the Congress Party). On two occasions, 1990-1996 and 1997-1998, he was also a member of the
Rajya Sabha. for a year from June 1991 to June 1992, he also carried the position of leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha. In 1999-2000, he became the Chairman of Committee of privileges. In the government under I. K. Gujral, he served as the minister for Information and Broadcasting on two occasions: in 1997-1998 and from 2004 under Manmohan Singh with additional responsibility for Culture.
Though Jaipal Reddy`s tenure in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting was too short but, he tried to revive the two powerful medium - The
All India Radio and The
Doordarshan, possibly for the first time, from the chokehold of officialdom. To ensure objectivity ended with the change of government, he attempted to grant complete autonomy to the two powerful media. AIR and Doordarshan by and large, have again become instruments of the ruling dispensation`s information.
As the member of 14th Lok Sabha of India, he represents the Miryalguda constituency of Andhra Pradesh and is a member of the
Indian National Congress as he returned in the parent organization.

He is presently the Cabinet Minister of Urban Development. The posts he held during his full political career are: President, Andhra Pradesh Youth Congress ( 1965-71) , General Secretary, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee( 1969-72) , Member, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly (four terms) ( 1969-84) , Member, National Executive, Janata Party ( 1979-88) , Elected to 8th Lok Sabha( 1984) , General Secretary, Janata Party ( 1985-88) , Member, Rajya Sabha ( 1990-96 and 1997-98) , Leader of Opposition, Rajya Sabha ( July 22, 1991 to June 28, 1992) , Union Cabinet Minister, Information and Broadcasting ( 1997-98) , Re-elected to 12th Lok Sabha (2nd term) ( 1998) , Member, Committee on Finance( 1998-99) , Member, Committee on Provision of Computers to Members of Parliament ( ) , Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Finance, Re-elected to 13th Lok Sabha (3rd term) ( 1999) , Chairman, Committee of Privileges ( 1999-2000) , Member, Committee on Finance, Member, Joint Committee on Patents (Second Amendment) Bill, 1999, Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Power ( 2000-2004) , Re-elected to 14th Lok Sabha( 4th term)( 2004) , Union Cabinet Minister, Information and Broadcasting; Culture( 23 May 2004 - onwards).
He acted as the spokesman for all the parties of which he has been a member and this has been a unique aspect of his political career. He is known for the quality of his debates in the
parliament and was awarded the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in 1998.
