Kumbhaka , Yoga Method of breathing
Another important technique of Ujjayi, Kumbhakar deals with the process of smooth inhalation.
  Types of Kumbhaka

Jalandhara-Bandha - Second important KumbhakaThe Yogic experts practice several Kumbhakas; each one is unique in its procedure. Amongst them, Abhyantara Kumbhaka is executed after heavy breathing in. While executing this type of Kumbhaka, one needs to have the `glottis` completely closed down, thereby not letting any air to pass to and from the human lungs. The second important Kumbhaka is the exercise of Jalandhara-Bandha and the third important one is the closing of the nostrils. With the closing of glottis so tightly, it most effectively prevents the inhaled air, which again continuously breaks through the air passage at the time of taking pause during the exercise of Kumbhaka.

Few things need to be kept in mind while executing this Kumbhaka technique of the Ujjayi exercise. As long as the chest walls stand firm with the ribs quite elevated, the `glottis ` will be able to do its work quite properly. It is thus advised that muscle contraction that happens while breathing in is also to be maintained through out Kumbhaka technique. Side by side, the abdomen too needs to be compressed and that too carefully.

There are many handbooks available, which actually talked about the merits of Kumbhaka during Ujjayi exercise. The main advantage of Kumbhaka lies in the abdominal contraction that has been mentioned just now. There is also a common belief, which states that the actual advantage of Kumbhaka lies in absorbing huge quantities of oxygen into the body, on account of the air absorption in to the human lungs. However, these are said on the basis of mere assumptions only without any scientific evidences to support these.
