Coochbehar, West Bengal

Coochbehar is centred on a lake called Sagardighi, with its chief attraction being the maharajah`s palace. Coochbehar town, a former princely town, today serves as the administrative headquarters of Coochbehar district. The Koch maharajas ruled Coochbehar for 400 years and their Coochbehar Palace has been developed into a museum. The Coochbehar Palace stands vast and radiant with unique architecture, grandeur and beauty.

The Madan Mohan Bari is one of the main attractions of Coochbehar. This is more than a century old ancient golden-domed temple. It stands on the north bank of Bairagi Dighi. Maharaja Nripendra Narayan built Madan Mohan Bari in 1889. The structure of this temple is in Charchala style of Hindu architecture. Inside the temple is an idol of Madan Mohan. It is the incarnation of Lord Krishna and the royal deity.

The famous Koch king Maharaja Nripendra Narayan built the Raj Bari or the Royal palace in 1887. It is the most important landmark of Coochbehar. For its spread eagle shape, it looks even larger from the outside. Royal palace was designed by an English architect, who was the favourite among the royalties of Kolhapur , Mysore and Baroda. The palace was built in 1887. This double storied brick building covers an area of 4768 square metres. It extends 120 metres from north to south and 90 metres from east to west. Certain rooms deserve special attention for their beautiful paintings in the ceiling as well as in the interior wall surface.

Baneshwar Temple is situated about 10 km north from Coochbehar town. It is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. By the side of the main temple is another temple, which has the idol of Ardhanarinateswar. This idol is carried temporarily to the Madan Mohan Temple of Coochbehar town, which has given the name of Movable Baneshwar on the occasions of Madan Chaturdashi and Dol Purnima.

Sagar Dighi attracts migratory birds and tourists in all seasons and is therefore an important tourist destination. The Sagar Dighi is a huge tank, which has been recently cleaned and cleared. A place for daily meetings and appointments, Sagar Dighi, is right in the centre of this small town. Boat rides and cool breeze around has made it all the more popular spot.

There are regular train and bus runs through from Kolkata to every corner of the district.
