Chandrakona is a town in West Bengal in the district of West Midnapore.It is located at 22.73° N 87.52° E and has an average elevation of 28 metres (91feet). According to the 2001 census Chandrakona had a population of 20,400 where population constitute about 51% and females 49%.14% of the population is under six years of age .Statistically ,the literacy rate of the region is 66%which is higher than the national average 59.5%.73% is the male literacy rate while 58% is the female literacy rate.Agriculture being the main occupation of the people this town of West Bengal is very famous for its potato cultivation .
In the past this town with fifty two bazaars was an important trading zone noted for its textile products, sugar, brass-ware and milk products.The town also had some beautiful temples .However now most of the temples are in ruins without any deities.The famous Pancharatna and Navaratna temples of Chandrakona bear resemblance with the Rekh -duel temples of Orissa .The temples also signify the tremendous impact of the cult of Dharmathakur over the area. At Gobindapur, Narahipur and Jayantipur localities of Chandrakona several Dharmathakur images are found .The female counterpart of Dharmathakur Kaminya is also found in the different localities of Chandrakona.The Kalkali Devi at Naraharipur locality is very famous.
