The town of Byadgi is situated in the Haveri district in the state of Karnataka in India. The town is well known for the red Byadgi chilli. The adjoining areas of the town produce long, red chilli, which is dehydrated in sunlight and sent to various markets, both in India and abroad. This spicy chilli is one of the frequent ingredients in Udupi culinary preparations.
The exact geographical location of the town is at 14.68° North and 75.48° East. It has an average elevation of 601 metres (1971 feet). The statistical figures of the 2001 India census unveils that the population of Byadgi is 25,658 including 51% males, 49% females and 13% children less than 6 years of age. While 74% of the males are literate, the female literacy is 60%. The town`s average literacy rate of 67% is considerably higher than the national average of 59.5%.
