Bundi and the eponymous princely state are believed to have derived their names from a former Meena king known as Bunda Meena. The Bundi school of painting is world famous. The city celebrates an annual festival known as the Bundi Utsav.

The city of Bundi has numerous places of tourist interest. The Bundi palace, built of locally mined stone, is one of the exemplary landmarks of Rajput architecture. There are meticulously carved brackets, pillars, balconies as well as sculpted elephants. The Diwan-I-Am, Hathi Pol and the Naubat Khana are wonderfully decorated. The palace also has a famous Chitra Shala, which provides a colorful glance of history. The walls and ceiling of this palace are entirely covered with paintings of the Bundi School.

Another important tourist spot is the Taragarh Fort, or `Star Fort`, which is the most inspiring of the city`s structures. It was erected in AD 1354 upon a sharp hillside. The biggest of its ramparts is the 16th century citadel known as the Bhim Burj, on which was formerly mounted a large cannon called Garbh Gunjam, or `Thunder from the Womb`. The fort provides a full view of the city below. It has three tanks, which are always replete with water. Bundi has other palaces and hunting lodges like the Phool Sagar Palace, Sukh Mahal and Shikar Burj. Each palace has its own historical significance.

The largest of Bundi`s baoris or stepwells is the elaborately carved Raniji ki Baori. Having a depth of 46 m, it was constructed in the year 1699 by Rani Nathavatji. The steps built along the sides of the water-well made water available even when the water table was very low. The Nawal Sagar is a large square shaped man-made lake in the center of Bundi consisting of many small islets. In the center of the lake stands a temple dedicated to Varuna, the vedic god of water. The lake feeds the frequent bavdis in the old city by creating an artificial water table. The Nagar Sagar twin step wells are identical step wells built with perfect masonry. The Dabhai Kund also known as the jail kund, is the largest of the kunds in Bundi.
