Overview of Kaimur Range
The Kaimur escarpment in the eastern Madhya Pradesh is an important physiographic feature that forms a watershed and divides 2 of the major rivers of peninsular India, the Son on the south and Tonson the north. The escarpment is almost 300 miles in length and continues into the Narmada Valley without any breach, excluding a few minor exceptions. The Kaimur Range runs through the entire length of Maihar and Amarpatan tehsils of Satna district in Madhya Pradesh in an easterly direction that is slightly inclined to the north. At Jhukehi, the strike of the Kaimur Range is displaced, producing the only gap in the whole length of the Vindhya Mountain.
There are several waterfalls and plateaux that run along the Kaimur Range. These fluvial plateaux start with the Panna Plateau in the west, followed by Bhander Plateau and Rewa Plateau and ends with the Rohtas Plateau in the east. Other than the plateaux, the Kaimur Range has hundreds of waterfalls ranging in height between 15 m and 180 m. Some of the significant waterfalls in the Kaimur region along this fault line are Purwa or Tons Falls that is placed on the Tons River, Chachai Falls on the Bihad River, a tributary of Tons River, the Keoti Falls on the Mahana River, a tributary of Tons River, Odda Falls on the Odda River, a tributary of Belah River, which is itself a tributary of Tons River, Devdari Falls on the Karmanasa River, Telharkund Falls on the Suara West River, Suara Falls on the Suara East River and many waterfalls and rivers are present there.
Some of the other interesting features of the Kaimur Range are the pre historic rock paintings, which were discovered in the hills and the districts of Nawada and Jamui in Bihar. The rock paintings depict pre historic lifestyle and natural environment. The paintings were symbolic for the love towards nature as they portrayed the various aspects of nature like the sun, moon, stars, animals, plants, trees, rivers, etc. Other than this, over the river banks of the Ganges at Chirhand, a Neolithic settlement was also discovered.
The Kaimur Range has several places of attraction that attracts tourists from all around.
