West Bengal has many places around it which are much sought after for spending weekends or as picnic spots. Gadiara is one such place, which is around 90 km away from the city. This place is a riverfront, and it is wonderful with the confluence of the rivers. Nature`s paradise it is the ultimate for all those who love to be amidst nature`s vivid abundance.
Gadiara not only has the beauty of the river side but many others alike the remains of the fort built by Governor-General Lord Clive. This historical monumnt reminds the presence of the British among the vast river front. The fort has been abandoned long time back and still stands as a memoir and a gateway to those days of colonial rule in India. Kolkata is rich in such monuments most of which have been preserved and they have become a glory to the whole country. Although this fort has been ruined a long time back due to natural calamities like the floods of 1942. the devastrating effect of the flood could only wash away the strucure but the essence and the legends woven around it still exists. This site still has that effect on tourists who visit the place, and are enthralled by the myth of the place.
The place is shaded all around due to the availability of the trees which make it just the right place for relaxation that has the power to cool down the nerves. Besides, the beautiful view is enhanced by the birds, the exotic wild flowers and the breeze that soothes all worries. The place has various agricultural farms that are ready with their crops to be harvested during the ripe reason and other times we get a different view during different seasons. During the evenings, the place aquires a rich hue which makes it the ultimate time to visit the lighthouse. This lighthouse bears the testimnony to that era of history when spice-laden ships which used to pass through into the far away lands. This light house has suffered the ravages of time and weather that had mostly affected it.
The lighthouse is forbidden to enter, but the beauty that is prevalent all around subdues the any such prohibition. On the huge spread of the river are seen sailboats and bhotbhotis that strive for space during that time. Not only is the scene beautiful it becomes fixed in the memory, the exeptionally beautiful confluence of Roopnarayan, Damodar and Hooghly rivers, prior to their submission into the sea.
Gadiara has fishermen`s village in the vicinity and also abounds in many eating joints and hotels where one can rent a room anytime duting the visit. The beauty of the Gadiara is not just in the river but also in the adjoining places nature`s presence. A trip to Gadiara is possible by buses or even by the railways. Whatever be the means of communication the ultimate thing is the wonderful view the memory captures.
