
Barwani District is a district situated in the state of
Madhya Pradesh in India. The administrative head quarters of the district are in the city of Barwani. The district spreads over an area of 3665 square km. According to the 2001 census, the total population of the district is 1,081,039. The district is in the extreme southwestern part of Madhya Pradesh. The state of
Maharashtra and the
Satpura Range to the south, the state of
Gujarat to the west, the Dhar district and the Narmada River to the north and the Khargone district to the east surround the district. After the princely state of Barwani became a part of the Union of India in 1948, it was included under the West Nimar district. Barwani District became a separate district on May 25, 1998.
The Barwani District consists of 2 sub- divisions, Barwani and Sendhawa which are in turn divided into 6 tahsils, Barwani, Sendhawa, Pansemal, Niwali, Thikari and Rajpur and 7 developmental blocks, Barwani, Pati, Sendhawa, Pansemal, Niwali, Thikari and Rajpur. The district has 417 panchayats and 646 villages, 576 revenue and 70 forests.
Bawangaja, a significant place of Jain pilgrimage lies 6 km from the Barwani town. The district harbours the world`s tallest statue of the Jain Tirthankara (saint) Ajitnathji. It is also home to the ancient fort of Bhawar Garh (Borgarh) and the temple of Goddess Beejasani (Durga).
