Arakkonam is a mid-sized town and a famous railway junction situated in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Arakkonam is a mid-sized town in the state of Tamil Nadu, which forms a part of the Indian subcontinent. According to the census of 2006 the census of this town is 82,500. The town of Arakkonam is located in the district of Vellore about 69 kilometers from the state capital of Chennai. The name of the town Arakkonam is derived from the Tamil term `Aaru konam` which signifies hexagon. The ancient name of this town was Arunthamizh Kundram. The name was so chosen because it has six important places on its six sides. The other towns, which are located at a short distance from this town, include Tiruttani, Kanchipuram, Sholingur and Tiruvalangadu. The languages, which are spoken, by most of the people of this town are Tamil and Telegu. Hindi is not a very prevalent language of this town but due to the presence of military establishments in some areas some speaks it. Arakkonam is also regarded as the second largest naval base in Asia.

The town of Arakkonam is also regarded as one of the important railway junctions in the southern part of the Indian subcontinent. The unique sounds associated with the railways contribute significantly to the lives of the inhabitants residing here. Even the common mass who are not associated with the railways in many ways are familiar with the technical terms used by the railway men. The Engineering Workshop (EWS) also believed to be one of the biggest workshop of the railways is situated in this town. One of the oldest schools in the India called Andrew`s High School is located in the town of Arakkonam. It celebrated its 150th anniversary recently. The strength of this school is about 3000. Another popular school called Bharathidasanar Matriculation School is famous all over for producing great talents. People from even the remotest corners of the state come to the town of Arakkonam to study in this popular school. The popular colleges of this town include Krishna Polytechnic, Jaya Arts and Science College, Arakkonam College of Arts and Science, which offer a host of under-graduate and graduate programs in different disciplines. Brilliant students from the town of Arakkonam have secured admissions to many reputed engineering institutions and medical colleges throughout the state and at the national and international level as well. The recreation and amusement centers like theatres and shopping places in this town are of mere average quality. It is because of the sheer talent of the inhabitants of Arakkonam that the town is growing at a very rapid pace.

Arakkonam is a constituency of the Indian Parliament as well as a Tamil Nadu state assembly constituency. Arakkonam also believed to be one of the hottest towns where the level of mercury can exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit for several days in the peak months of summer. Several industries are also set up in this town like Ramco Cement Factory, MRF Ltd., Tiruvalangadu Sugar Factory, TTL, Ultratech Cements. Reaching the town of Arakkonam is very convenient in the recent times. This town is well connected with many Indian cities like Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, Palghat, Mysore, Vellore, Ooty, Hubli, Tirupati, Mangalore.
