Arakkonam is a mid-sized town in the state of Tamil Nadu, which forms a part of the Indian subcontinent. According to the census of 2006 the census of this town is 82,500. The town of Arakkonam is located in the district of Vellore about 69 kilometers from the state capital of Chennai. The name of the town Arakkonam is derived from the Tamil term `Aaru konam` which signifies hexagon. The ancient name of this town was Arunthamizh Kundram. The name was so chosen because it has six important places on its six sides. The other towns, which are located at a short distance from this town, include Tiruttani, Kanchipuram, Sholingur and Tiruvalangadu. The languages, which are spoken, by most of the people of this town are Tamil and Telegu. Hindi is not a very prevalent language of this town but due to the presence of military establishments in some areas some speaks it.
