The much popular television and film actor Ali Asgar is known both in the small screen and the large screen for his outstanding performance. At present he is prominently shown in the widely popular tele-soap of the Star Plus namely Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. This actor likes living her life on her own terms. He has also carved a niche for himself with a repertoire of roles that are far from the stifled and suffering kind. The fact that he has a very strong personality gives her an edge to avoid the run-of-the-mill kind of roles. According to him working in television is more challenging as the actor gets a chance of appearing on it everyday and carving out a niche for himself in the hearts of his fans whereas in the case of films, the actor gets the chance to appear only in few films in a year. He also thinks that films are altogether a different medium and there is a lot of stake involved in it. According to him one needs to be really lucky to be offered good character based roles.
Ali Asgar is born and brought up in Mumbai does not come from an acting background and was totally engaged in the business of restaurants. He has also pursued a course in catering from the Institute of Hotel Management at Dadat, which is situated in the tinsel town. He was supposed to go to abroad and join a hotel in the food and beverage department after the successful completion of his degree. As the contract demanded his presence in abroad for a span of 10 years he was not allowed to go there, as he was the only child in his family. As the hotel industry does not pay well in Mumbai, the next best profession he thought of opting for was acting. It was by a sheer coincidence that he got to act in the serial Ek Do Teen Char. In his school days however he used to participate in all sorts of extracurricular activities with much gusto. He was regarded as a big hit during the festival of Christmas and always used to enact the role of Santa Claus. As far as his nature is concerned his interests include traveling, sports and horses. He loves to spend time appreciating the beauty of the nature. His favorite color is black and is favorite cuisine is all sorts of Indian delicacies and dishes prepared specially by his mom who is also a great cook. His all time favorite actor is Sanjeev Kumar. This immensely talented actor never thought that he will be, what he is today but at the same time also believes in the saying that what has been destined will happen.
The entry of Ali Asgar into the television industry is regarded as purely accidental. He was only at a tender age of fifteen when he entered television. It so happened that one day he and his brother were cycling near Sea Rock Hotel in Bandra where Rajiv Mehra of Eagle Productions was shooting for his film Jaal. His brother was stopped by the film unit and asked to report for an audition on the next day. His father than took his brother to the sets the very next day but Rajiv thought that his brother was too young to play in the role he had in mind and after an audition selected him in that role. After a brief span he got a call saying that he had been selected for the serial which was based on Enid Blyton`s `Famous Five`. It was only at this time that Rajiv spotted him and induced the acting itch in him by offering him the role in `Ek Do Teen Char` that his acting career started off in a full swing. After that he never had to look back in his life. He appeared in much soap after this but then the major turning point of his life occurred when the much popular daily Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki fell into his lap. He would continue to do serials but he is more lured by the silver screen. When asked him about his lure, he frankly admits that it is both the fame and fortune that`s attracts him towards the big screen. He also admits that the serials has given him the recognition that he desired but it is only in films that he finds his passion of acting achieving creative satisfaction. So both the creative and the commercial aspect gain equal significance in life. He has been seen in many small roles in the silver screen. In Vikram Bhatt`s Aitbaar he plays a close friend of the Bollywood bombshell Bipasha Basu. He was also seen in a small role in F.C. Mehra`s Chamatkaar many years back which had the Bollywood Badshaah Shah Rukh Khan playing the lead role. He was also a part of many other assignments like Parampara, Karz, Khatta Meetha, Kutumb, Chashme Baddoor, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Gharonda and Tere Ghar Ke Samne. But he will never forget the day when the role of Kamal in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki was approached to him.
Ali Asgar claims that comedy is the most difficult thing to enact but the tragedy is that Indian neither understands nor appreciates it. Indians are somehow attracted to the character, which is taken for a ride by the evil forces yet is able to maintain his calm and be good to others. He also says that he was majorly attracted to this goodness in the character of Kamal. He enjoyed playing someone who is absent in today`s world. He feels that he will be the happiest person in this world if he can mend even one person who goes against the ways of his parents and hurts them. He is also sure about the fact that someone or the other has already idolized the character Kamal as an icon. He believes that today television has a wider reach and a bigger audience than cinema and also acts on subliminal levels far more than it happens on the silver screen. He feels that he can completely identify with his role in `Kahani`. He would do exactly what this character has done in the serial, like marrying the girl whom his brother cant marry at the last minute and also making his parents, brother and sister the first priority. Another thing, which he considers, is of vital importance is his clothes and the way he looks. He feels that in order to carry a character properly he must look good. He also feels happy about the facts that nowadays the channels take special interest in all the characters and their attires, which in turn enhances the character and adds to the confidence level of the actor. His strength lies in the very fact that he never gets jittery before a difficult scene and he can portray the most difficult shot in a very light manner. He prefers to make the character feel like an everyday character and claims that he can never be melodramatic. He feels that `Kahani` propagates strong moral values and that is the reason as to why the serial holds the sway. Their target audience is mostly the elderly folk and are being conveyed the message through this serial that they have a voice which needs to be raised against the ill treatment that are meted out to them. He feels lucky about the facts that so far in his career he has not got a historic character to portray which requires a lot of make and reading to get into the skin of the character. He does not prefer to take his professional work back home and also doesn`t judge his performances on the sets. He also doesn`t whimper when he is asked for 10 retakes for a particular shot as he is of the firm belief that nobody is perfect. He sometimes requests his director to change the lines if he feels that it is totally against the character of Kamal especially in the scenes of over-reactions against his brother and sister-in-law whom he literally worships. He completely believes that either the role or fee should be good before he signs on the dotted line. He doesn`t want to appear in roles, which are not an integral part of the script, or to put it in better words, the roles, which will wipe off from the minds of his fan following in a very short span. He has set his own standards on the television, which he is going to achieve. But in the silver screen he idolizes Sanjeev Kumar, Agha and Mehmood. He is particularly very fond of Agha as he feels no comedian from the contemporary times can match any of his performances. In the small screen he idolizes Kiran Karmarkar and Sakshi Tanwar. In the future years he wants to venture into the field of direction. He has a very simple idea about life and that is smiling at the cost of any adverse situations as a smile can only be given as charity. His fans believe that he will always live up to their expectations with his powerhouse performances.
