Types of Punching There are many types of punching that can be associated with kickboxing. The punching techniques associated with kickboxing include jab, hook, and cross, uppercut, flying punch, overhead, bolo punch, half swing and half hook. Jab This is a direct punch from the lead hand, to either the body or head. It is frequently used in conjunction with the cross. Hook This a rounded punches in an arching motion, on either the body or head. It is generally not scored in scoring points. Flying Punch The flying punch is mainly struck from the back hand, the fighter hops on the front foot, kicking back with the back foot and at the same time extends the back hand as a punch, in the form of "superman" flying through the sky. Uppercut It is the rising punch striking the chin. Back fist usually comes from the front hand, spinning back fist and reverse back fist both usually from the back hand - are strikes to the head, raising the arm and bending the arm at the elbow and then straightening the arm rapidly to strike to the side of the head with the rear of the knuckles, common in "light contact". Cross Counter It is actually a counter punch that begun immediately after an opponent throws a jab, taking advantage of the opening in the position of the opponent. Overhand It is a vertical or semi circular punch thrown with the back hand. It is usually used when the opponent is slipping or bobbing. There are numerous variant or special kicking techniques which includes spinning kicks, jumping kicks, and other variants such as Heel Kick or Hook Kick Expanding the leg to the side of the body and hooking the back leg to strike the head with either the sole or heel. Axe Kick It is referred to as stomp out kick. It mainly travels downward, striking with the side or base heel. Back Kick It is delivered with the base of the heel. Sweeping: It is a process where one foot or both the feet of an opponent sweep, depending upon their balance, position and strength. Knee and Elbow Strikes Straight knee thrust: This is a strike delivered with the knee with the reverse or back foot against the groin, stomach, hip or spine of an opponent. = Rising Knee Strike It can be delivered with the back or front foot. It makes a dangerous snap upward to hit an opponent's chin, throat, chest or face. Hooking Knee Strike This shot can be delivered with the back foot or front foot by the sticker, and it makes for a half spin and hits the side of an opponent. Side Knee Snap Strike This technique is highly deceptive and used in the close range fighting.
