The first ever Ranji Championship was won by Mumbai in the 1934-35 seasons with
Vijay Merchant featuring in the final against North India. In the following season, the title was retained with a clear victory over Madras (now
Chennai) in the final match. At a very nascent stage of the Ranji Trophy history Mumbai showed that they were a strong side and of course of the strongest side of the competitions. The Mumbai team bagged 7 titles out of the first 20 seasons in the
Ranji Trophy.
After a long tenure of dominance by the Mumbai team, in which, the team won 20 out of 22 titles including 15 in a row from 1958-59 to 1972-73. Bombay continued to regularly reach the Ranji Trophy final up to the mid 1980s. But in later part of the 1980`s Mumbai had a lean phase where they could not reach the finals in 5 consecutive appearances. But they were able to regain some of the past glory in the 1990`s by winning an additional 6 Ranji Tophies from 1993-94 to 2003-04, this was the phase when the team changed its name from Bombay to Mumbai.
Mumbai`s dominance of the Ranji Trophy has led to many consecutive appearances in the
Irani Trophy with great success including 15 wins. However, they have failed to beat the Rest of India team since 1998.
In the 2006-07 season of the Ranji Trophy Mumbai won their 37th title against Bengal at
Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
