In the field of medical treatment, hypnosis can help overcome a number of problems. It can be used for situations ranging from overcoming fears to relieving pain experienced after surgery. It helps to ease the suffering caused from a disease even among terminal patients, and it has even been known to shorten the delivery stage of labour. It helps in overcoming addictions such as alcoholism, eating disorders, smoking etc. In the case of children too a number of advantages can be reaped from hypnosis. Hypnotherapy can help them to overcome chronic asthma, bed wetting, stammering etc.

Hypnotherapy has proved extremely beneficial for curing various kinds of phobias, such as obsessive compulsive disorder, obsessive behaviours, panic attacks, anxiety disorders, and other stress-related symptoms such as short tempers and insomnia. Any conditions that are aggravated by stress and tension, such as nausea, hives, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and even excessive sweating and blushing, can be effectively treated using forms of hypnosis therapy.

The use of hypnosis in dentistry is termed as Hypnodontia. Apart from smoothing out dental procedures by the way of generalized anti-anxiety effects, use of Hypnodontia can lead to overall patient comfort and make the pain during dental operation bearable and acceptable. It also decreases resistance to future intervention and the post-hypnotic suggestions indicate more rapid recovery.

Hypnosis is also used to cure a number of skin diseases. In this case it is referred to as Hypnodermatology. The effectiveness of hypnosis is mostly noticed in Warts, Acne, genital and oral herpes, hives, skin allergies, Eczema and Psoriasis, pain and burning sensations and compulsive skin picking and hair pulling.

Hypnotism is also used for the purposes of entertainment. It is referred to as Stage Hypnotism. During such a performance, the hypnotist calls upon a member of the audience and induces in them a trance-like state. Following this the person is asked to perform according to the instructions of the hypnotist while the rest of the audience watches.

Practice of hypnosis for courtroom testimonies is applicable in a number of countries as long as the stringent criteria and guidelines are met.
