The British established the three Presidency Towns like Madras, Bombay Presidency and Calcutta to echo the true tune of the English drama before India`s independence. Quite ideally therefore English theatre before India`s independence was then just a replica of the European lifestyle and mores. The change however came much later precisely with India`s independence. English theatre bit by bit then carved a niche in the rich timeline of the other Indian theatre forms. Eminent Indian theatre personalities like the K.N. Pannikar, Girish Karnad, Vijay Tendulkar, Habib Tanvir and many others contributed to the opulence of Indian drama.
