The origin of the beautiful town of Mewar in the state of
Rajasthan in India is rooted in mythology. The Ahar civilization of Mewar has been accepted as contemporary to the oldest of all civilizations, Indus Valley Civilization. In fact the Mewar dynasty traces its roots to the powerful Sun-God and its history has been a continuous struggle for freedom of religion, thought and land against other Rajputs. This land of rich tradition was a Rajput kingdom for several centuries and in the later ages became a princely state under the British colonial rule. The very utterance of the term `Mewar` conjures up before the mind`s eye the entire panorama of the Indian history. The region of Mewar, the family of the Maharana and the concept of kingship have survived the vicissitudes of time. Mewar is also regarded as the land from where the deities and men jointly spread `Manav Dharma` and the varied principles of self-reliance and self-respect to the Indian populace as a whole.
Music has deeply ingrained in the lives of the people of
Rajasthan and especially that of Mewar. It is almost impossible to state with absolute certainty when and how the uninterrupted existence of music in Mewar originated.
Music here not only forms an integral part of life but is also the most effective means of self-expression as well as the living mirror of the composite culture of the region. According to some it is also a yoga form, which helps one to refine the capabilities of human beings while indulging in the service to religion and mankind. Shopping in Mewar also proves to be an enchanting cultural experience as the brilliant land glitters with vibrant hues of elaborate handicrafts. The regal pleasure of shopping for articles ranging from folk toys to Bandhni textiles, mirror work crafts to beadwork crafts, traditional Pichwai or Miniature paintings on cloth to colorful puppets and cloth lanterns, metal craft or terracotta work, Mewar surprises you with the availability of all.

The Mewar festival is celebrated in the region to welcome the advent of the spring season. It coincides with the Gangaur festival of Udaipur, another popular town of Rajasthan. This festival has a unique charm about it. During this auspicious occasion the women folk gather to adorn the images of Isar and Gangaur and then carry them in a ceremonial procession in which all the locals participate with much enthusiasm and vigor and then winds its way to the Gangaur Ghat at Lake Pichhola. It is here that the images are transferred to the boat amidst much singing and dancing.
The
economy of this region of south-central Rajasthan state in the western part of India depends chiefly on the tourism industry, mining industry, marble and other stone industry, cement, tyre, handicraft industry, agrarian industry and fisheries. Nature has also freely bestowed upon the region of Mewar the precious gifts of charming geographical surroundings and lively, curious inhabitants. The top tourist attraction of Mewar includes the Chittorgarh hilltop fort, which is indeed a depiction as well as reflection of the land of composite cultures. Lord Shiva is considered to be the ruling deity of this heavenly place.
