India is noted for the vistas of culture, tradition and also geographical variations, climatic conditions and demography. A Union Territory, defined as the "sub-national administrative division of India" is directly ruled by the Federal National Government.
The Union territories are therefore under the domination of direct administration and control of the federal government of India. The President of India nominates an Administrator or Lieutenant Governor for each territory. As per recent statistics, there are six union territories. Delhi became the National Capital Territory in the year 1991.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands is one of the important union territories of India. Its capital is Port Blair. It is situated in the Indian Ocean, and has more than five hundred and seventy islands. Formerly, the British used them as an isolated prison for the fighters of Indian Independence. However, these `Emerald Islands` are a famous tourist destination. Few of the islands in Andaman and Nicobar are rugged, nicely juxtaposed with dense `tropical` forests and serene coastal beaches. . It is also famous for the active volcano, known as Barren Island. Adventure sports like trekking, Island camping, snorkeling, SCUBA diving are in thing in Andaman Na Nicobar Islands epeciaaly among the tourists. The places of interest are Cellular Jail, Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Water Sports Complex, Fisheries Museum, Chidiya Tapu, Mount Harriet and Samudrika Museum.
Among the union territories of India, Dadra and Nagar Haveli are situated in the western region of India, Silvasa is its capital city and `Lieutenant Governor` administered it. It is located on the northern banks of the Daman Ganga River. The main language of this union territory is Gujarati. The inhabitants took up manufacturing as their main occupation, thus constituting a considerable proportion of the economy of the region. .
Amongst union territories of India, Lakshwadeep is the smallest one, situated in the Arabian Sea. It consists of twelve coral atolls, three coral reefs, five banks, and numerous islets, and is under the jurisidiction of Kerala High Court. The capital of this union territory is Kavaratti. It is a famous tourist destination and has many state of the art hotels. The main islands are Kavaratti, Agatti, Amini and Minicoy. Tall green coconut palms offer spectacular beauty and turn this land into a tropical paradise. It is a land of lagoons, its exquisite `underwater` life that perplexes viewers and tourists. Dolphins, Turtles, Tuna, Rays and Flying fish too drew the attraction of the tourists.
Daman and Diu is the second smallest among the other union territories in India, with its two distinct parts, enveloped between Arabian Sea and Gujarat. Daman is situated near Surat: and Diu is located near Junagadh. The chief profession for the people of Daman and Diu is fishing. It is a stunning tourist spot, and is famous for its Nagoa Beach. There are few hotels to accommodate to the lodging needs of tourists.
Puddchery is a significant among the union territories of India. Since it was under the dominance of French Colony, French influence is quite prominent even in the contemporary period also. The whole city can be distinctly divided into two sections: the French quarter and the Indian quarter. Many streets still have their French names. Even the buildings are an ideal mix of frenches colonial style. Crops like paddy, coconuts, arcanuts, condiments, spices, pulses, groundnut and chilies are cultivated here. The state economy shows its extravagance in various professions like agriculture and fisheries.
Among the Union territories of India, the name of Chandigarh deserves special mentioning due to its unique functioning. Being the capital of two states, namely Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh still is not under the jurisdiction of either state. Rather it is under the control of the Central government and hence is regarded as union territory.
Delhi too is no less significant among the union territories of India. Infact has the political status of a `federally-administered` union territory, called the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT). A constitutional amendment in 1991 bestowed upon Delhi a special status; Delhi has its own legislative assembly with restricted powers. The National Capital Territory of Delhi comprises nine districts, 27 tehsils, three statutory towns viz. Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Committee (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment Board (DCB), 59 census towns and 165 villages.
Union territories of India deserve special rights and status due to its constitutional formation and development.
