Indian Clothing

Through out the world, Indian clothing is renowned for its ethnic wears, perfectly depicting the richness and exuberance of the cultural heritage. Both male and female folks of India develop a unique and exclusive way of clothing and dressing. Indian clothing categorizes separate dresses, depending on seasonal variations and geographical locations. Though the majority of Indian women wear traditional Indian costumes, the men in India can be found in more conventional western clothing like shirts and trousers.

However, men in Indian villages are still more comfortable in traditional attire like kurtas, lungis, dhotis and pyjamas. Indian dresses & styles are marked by many variations, both religious and regional and one is likely to witness a plethora of colors, textures and styles in garments worn by the Indians.

ShervaniThe most familiar dress for Indian men is Dhoti . It is a rectangular piece of unstitched cloth, typically five yards of length and is wrapped around the waist and the legs. Known as Laacha in Punjabi, mundu in Malayalam, , veshti in Tamil, pancha in Telugu, dhotar in Marathi it has become a style mark for Indian men . In various regions of India, Dhoti are being wear with inimitable fashion. In northern India, the garment is worn with a Kurta on top. This combination is better known as "dhoti kurta", or a "dhuti panjabi" in the East . In southern India, the gaudy garment is specially associated with wedding ceremonies and other joyous festivals. . The participants of a South Indian wedding , including the groom deck up in the traditional `pancha` while performing the ceremonies. Silk panchas, called Magatam or Pattu Pancha in various places of South India. For Bengali grooms, off- white dhuti is a hot favorite. Another dress which ennobles the wealth of Indian clothing is sherwani. It is generally reserved for special occasions. In Northern India , especially the Punjabis, have developed fascination for wear salwar kameez. Salwar- kameez are made up of plain Indian clothingwhite cotton, and the kameez with a dark waistcoat add on glory to the dress . The lungi is a type of cloth wrapped around the waists . This is a casual dress mainly worn by men at home.

Likewise, for women, the Sari remains the traditional Indian clothing. It is a long piece of cloth made from fine cotton, silk or other fabrics , weaving in different grains with different designs. The sari has a lasting charm , adding elegance and beauty of an Indian woman. The color and the textural suitability vary with the age ,status and region , though it is worn in every possible occasions. The tightly fitted, short blouse worn under a sari is called a choli. The types too is as divergent as the style of wearing and wrapping. Chikan, Banarasi, Tant , Gadwal are far-famed among Indian women unanimously. Another popular attire of women in Indian clothing is the Indian salwar-kameez. It originated as popular attire of North India , especially, in the region of Kashmir and Punjab . However, it is getting wide acceptance among Indian women of the other states also. Traditiinal Lehenga CholiSalwars are `pyjama-like` pants tightly fitted in the waist and the ankles. Along with salwars the women wear in the top, an elongated and baggy tunic known as a kameez. Instead of salwar a woman often wear a churidar . Like Salwar ,a churidar is a type of trouser , tightly fitted at the portions like hips, thighs and ankles. Over this, one might wear a collarless or mandarin-collar tunic called a kurta.

Indian clothing too constitute very colorful dresses , highlighting their splendor and grandeur. Rajasthani and Gujarati women , especially, dress in multicolored twirling skirts called lehenga, matching nicely with a short top called a choli. As a part of their traditional practices they cover their heads with beautiful veils , popularly known odhani.

India is an abode of various tribal communities. Each one of them dress up according to their own fashion and tradition, thus, enriching the trend of Indian clothing. Indian clothing as varied and enriched as the whole demographical variation of the country itself, keeping intact its originality and beauty.
