With the smallest area of 496 sq. km, the Bishnupur district is one of the smallest districts of Manipur. The local language spoken in the region is Meiteilon along with other minority languages like Rongmei, Nepali, Bengali, Hindi and Thadou.
The Bishnupur district is bounded on the north by Imphal West district, on the south by Churachandpur district, on the east by Imphal and Thoubal districts. The town of Bishnupur is the administrative headquarters of the district.
Etymology of Bishnupur District
The 15th century brick Vishnu Temple in the area is one of the popular tourist attractions and the name Bishnupur is thus derived from this Vishnu temple located at Lamangdong.
History of Bishnupur District
Originally known as Lumlangdong, currently Lamangdong the history of Bishnupur district can be traced back to the ancient times when Kyamba ascended the throne in Manipur in 1467 AD. During his reign, the relation between the Pong king Khe- Khomba and Kyamba flourished and thus resulted in a decent foreign policy. It was during his time that the worship of Hindu God, Vishnu started in Manipur and it was under his patronage that the brick temple of Lord Vishnu was built in Bishnupur.
