The construction of this religious site coincided with the beginning of the First World War in 1914. The monastery thus derives its name as Mag-Dhog meaning warding off the war and the cause of construction was dedicated to the cause of world peace.

Mag-Dhog Yolmowa Buddhist Monastery is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Darjeeling that is worth a visit. A queer sense of curiosity arises whoever visits the monastery, due to its eerie surroundings. The monastery houses statues of Lord Buddha that depicts different forms that are just beyond words of description. The statue of Lord Buddha and Padma Sambhava in Mag-Dhog Yolmowa Buddhist Monastery has a unique place in the history of architecture.

The wall paintings of Mag-Dhog Yolmowa Buddhist Monastery are said to be done with the help of herbs and grass, reflecting an amazing work of art. The embossed images on the paintings can be felt with the very touch of the visitor that just makes one wonder how patient the painters must have been to paint all of the walls that too with every minute detail. Each painting stands as the teaching about life. Another interesting and the most valuable are the ancient scriptures that lay inside the Mag-Dhog Yolmowa Buddhist Monastery. This site has become a well known tourist attraction in Darjeeling.
