Coins of Mithila were square shaped and made of silver and gold metals.

Oinvara dynasty had established its kingdom in Mithila during the time of the Tughlaqs. The rulers of this dynasty had issued coins in gold and silver. The coins bore legend and sometimes the names of the kings with the era.

Siva Singh the seventh member of this dynasty had issued some tiny gold coins. The coin bore the `Sri` on the obverse and `Sivasya` on the reverse side of the coin. Apart from the gold coins, silver coins were issued during the time of Bhairava Simha of this dynasty. These coins followed the weight standard of 162 grains and they bore a long legend divided into two parts. This was placed in a square area. The legend contained `Maharaja Sri Darpanarayan-atmaja Tribhuktiraja Sri Bhairavasimhasya`. The regnal year was placed on one side in the four corners and the Saka era in a similar way on the other.

At the same time, another family ruled in the territory south of Nepal on both sides of the river Gandak. One of the rulers of this dynasty, Madansimhadeva, ha also issued coins which bore the Nagari legend `Govinda-charana-pranava-Madana` on the obverse and `Champakaranyasya` on the reverse side of the coin.
