
The state of West Bengal is well known for various regions and is one of the most prominent states in India. The state has a remarkable collection of numerous flora and fauna species and thus, there are a number of eco parks established here to preserve this rich wildlife. The West Bengal eco parks have so far done a great job in preserving the rich variety of wildlife in the state and they are also working on enhancing the population of the endangered species. The eco parks are situated in the major places of the state and are playing a big role in the tourism sector of West Bengal, as well, by attracting a large number of tourists, every year. The important eco parks in West Bengal include the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve, the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary, the Neora Valley National Park, the Buxa Tiger Reserve, the Singalia National Park, the Gorumara National Park, etc.
The initiative of preserving the rich variety of wildlife in the state and establishing eco parks for serving the purpose, started several years back. Mainly the naturalists and environmentalists of the state took the initiatives and they later got necessary assistance from the State Government of West Bengal and also from the Government of India. The West Bengal eco parks are now being run and managed by both the private and government organisations. Most of the eco parks in West Bengal are concentrated on preserving all the aspects of wildlife like reptiles, plants, mammals and birds. However, there are a few like the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve, which are mainly aimed at preserving certain species like the Tigers, Birds, etc.

The West Bengal eco parks are home to a wide variety of plant species that comprise the natural vegetation of the state. The plant species found in these eco parks have both the medicinal and commercial values. The tree species named, Sundari from which the named of Sunderbans came, is the most important tree species found in West Bengal. Some of the other important plant species include the Rhododendron, Magnolia, Oak, Hemlock, Silver Fir, Juniper, Mailing Bamboo, Buk, Kawla, Bhujpatra, Primulas, Aconitums, Gentians, Arisaemas, Orchids, Teak, Simul, Siris, Khair, etc. The West Bengal eco parks are also quite rich in preserving reptile species that include hundreds of Snakes, Tortoise, Crocodiles, Turtles, etc. The collection of Snakes species in West Bengal is considered to be one of the richest in India.
The Royal Bengal Tiger is undoubtedly the most important one among all the mammal species found in the West Bengal eco parks. The Sunderbans Tiger Reserve is mainly concentrated on preserving the Tigers and the number of other mammal species found in the other eco parks is also quite remarkable. The mammal species include the endangered, critically endangered, threatened or endemic species. Some of the most important and notable mammal species found in the West Bengal eco parks include the Leopard, Serow, Pangolin, Elephant, Chinkara Takin, Red Panda, Barking Deer, One Horned Rhinoceros, Bison, Brahmani Duck, Giant Squirrel, Gaur, Chital, Clouded Leopard, Wild Buffaloes, etc.
The number of bird species found in the West Bengal eco parks is even richer and they include both the resident and migratory birds. Some of the bird species are considered as endangered, critically endangered, threatened or endemic species and they are being preserved specially. Some of the most common bird species include the Indian Pied Hornbill, Woodpeckers, Sunbird, Fly Catcher, Minivet, Drongo, Pheasants, Brown Winged Kingfisher, Grey Headed Lapwing, Golden Backed Woodpecker, White Swans, Swamp Patridge, Pallas Fish Eagle, etc.
Apart from acting as the preserver and protector of rich flora and fauna species in the state, the West Bengal eco parks are also contributing hugely to the tourism sector of the state. The eco parks are considered to be some of the most popular tourist destinations in the state and they attract a large number of tourists from all over the world, every year. The tourists mainly come to see the Royal Bengal Tiger that is not found almost anywhere in the world and the scenic beauty of the eco parks also attract them, very much. The managements of some of the parks have also arranged for some extra facilities for the tourists, like accommodation, elephant riding, horse riding, boating, jeep safari, etc.
