 Dadasaheb Phalke Award is given by the government of India. This award is annually given to acknowledge the lifetime contribution of an Indian cinema personality towards Indian cinema. Back in the year 1969, during the birth centenary of the legendary Indian cinema personality, Dada Saheb Phalke, this award was instituted for the very first time, to commemorate the contribution and to honor the distinguished contribution to the growth and promotion of the Indian film medium.
The first recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was actress Devika Rani Roerich. That was just the beginning and since then, the award has been bestowed on some of the legendary personalities of the Indian film industry. Dadasaheb Phalke award for one particular year is offered during the end of the following year coupled with the National Film Award.
