Qutab ud-din Aibak

Qutab ud-din Aibak was born to a Turk Family. He was captured and sold as a slave when he was a child. But he was lucky enough to receive good education and training in the field of archery and horsemanship. He was again sold to a slave merchant and with the favor of fortune Muhammad Ghori bought him. With great intellect and quality, he became Muhammad Ghori`s favorite. Ghuri absorbed him as the Lieutenant General. Aibak assisted Ghori for most of his expedition to India and was appointed as the Viceroy of Northern India.

In 1206 after Ghuri, Aibak was elected as the Sultan. After a power struggle Aibak successfully established himself as the ruler of the empire in Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India. He has already ruled these areas as the Viceroy. He shifted the capital first from Ghazni to Lahor and then to Delhi. He was the first Muslim ruler in South Asia. When Aybak, the slave raised to the status of sultan, the equality concept in Islam reached to its highest position. The Slave Dynasty served as the first Turkish Dynasty in India from 1206 to 1290.

The Qutub Minar, Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque and Delhi`s earliest construction were the initiatory step of Qutb-ud-din Aybak. The Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque was built after destroying a Hindu Temple.

In 1210 while playing polo, he fell from a horse and died. So he could not rule for long period. He was buried near the Anarkali Bazar in Lahor. During his tenure, he was engaged mainly with revolts of the nobles like Nasir-ud-din Qubachah, Taj-ud-din Ildiz and few Hindu Rajas. He within these four years of his rule established a strong administrative system. Aibak was also known as `Lakh Baksh` because of his generosity.

His successors were also slaves like him and the dynasty is known as Slave Dynasty. Shams-ud-din Iltutmish, ex-slave of Turkic ancestry married to Aibak`s daughter succeeded him as the Sultan of Delhi.
