The word Avinashi means indestructible. This is one of the seven Shivastalams. Avinashi is also called Dakshina Varanasi.

History: Inscriptions reveal that the Cholas, Pandyas and the Hoysalas made extensive endowments to this temple.

Legend: Sundaramoorthy Nayanar on his way to Tiruvanchikulam is said to have rescued a boy from the clutches of a crocodile and this event is commemorated during the `Mudalai Vaai Pillai` Utsavam on Panguni Uththiram.

Temple: .Ambal`s sanctum is to the right of Avinasiappar`s sanctum. The Kasi Gangai Theertham is in the form of a well. The Kaalabhairava shrine is held in reverence. And is offered Vadai Maalai during worship.

Architecture: This temple has two prakarams and is adorned with Navaranga mandapam in the inner prakaram. The mandapam is in front of Ambal sanctum and has some great sculptures. There is a large nandi and a carved image of a scorpion in the Ambal sanctum. Several some beautiful carvings here and this temple is a protected monument under the Archeological survey of India.

Festivals: The annual Bhrammotsavam is celebrated in the month of Chittirai.
