The Indian army personnel are designated as Sepoys, Havildars, Subedars, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Colonel, Brigadier, Major-General, General and others. Amongst these the rank of the General is the highest in the set up of Indian army. The Indian army personnel have time and again proved to be an indispensable part of the Indian administration at the hours of utmost need. It is because of these personnel that the civilians in all corners of the country are leading an untroubled life.

Major Som Nath Sharma, Company Havildar Major Piru Singh, Captain Vikram Batra, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, Lt General Sundararajan Padmanabhan, K.M. Cariappa and several others are definitely some of the numerous Indian army personnel who have sacrificed their lives whilst serving the nation. Most of these army officers are martyrs and have been rewarded with Param Vir Chakra.
