The personalities of West Bengal have glorified the name of their homeland in varied sectors with success. Be it science, religion, films, politics, music, dance, literature or anything, the Bengalis have excelled without any limitations. Many stalwarts of the nation are from West Bengal. Swami Vivekananda is the chief disciple of the 19th century mystic Ramakrishna and the founder of Ramakrishna Mission and is a prominent personality from Bengal. Vivekananda is the first Hindu missionary who propagated Hinduism and Yoga in Europe and America. He is the person who spread Hinduism to the position of a world religion during the end of 19th Century and was the prime force in the revival of Hinduism in India. Rabindranath Tagore, also known by the sobriquet Gurudev was a Bengali poet and Brahmo religionist. This multi faceted personality had other fields of recognition as a visual artist, playwright, novelist, and composer whose works redefined Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was Asia`s first Nobel laureate when he won the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature. He was the founder of Visva-Bharati University.
Sri Aurobindo was an Indian nationalist, mystic, scholar, evolutionary philosopher, poet, yogi and guru. After a short political career, he has been the leader of the early movement for the freedom of India from British rule. Later, he explored spiritual realms of human existence and thus developed a new path, which he termed integral yoga. Subhas Chandra Bose; more popular as Netaji was one of the most important and highly respected leaders of the Indian independence movement against the British Raj.
Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhyay, more popular as Hemanta Mukherjee was an Indian singer, composer and producer. He sang numerous Hindi and Bengali songs under the name Hemant Kumar. Ananda Shankar was an Indian Bengali musician best known for his talent of fusing Western and Eastern musical styles; he married another talented danseuse Tanushree Shankar. Pandit Ravi Shankar is a Bengali Indian sitar player and composer and is a disciple of Ustad Allauddin Khan, the founder of the Maihar gharana of Hindustani classical music.
Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was a Bengali poet, essayist, novelist and journalist, most famous as the author of Vande Mataram that inspired the freedom fighters of India, and was later was declared as the National Song of India. Amartya Sen is a reputed Indian economist, philosopher, and a winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998, "for his contributions to welfare economics". He particularly researched on famine, welfare economics, human development theory, the underlying mechanisms of poverty and political liberalism. Uttam Kumar was a legendary Bengali actor and is fondly called the Mahanayak or the "Great Hero" of Bengali cinema. Some of his selected films are Nayak (The Hero), Chiriyakhana, "Chhoti si Mulaqat", "Amanush", "Ananda Ashram", "Kitaab" and "Dooriyan".
