
Kasturba Medical College (KMC) is situated in Mangalore and it started its journey in 1955. Initially the college utilised the clinical facilities of the Government Wenlock General Hospital and Government Lady Goschen Hospital. The preclinical section in Mangalore was started in 1961. The Kasturba Medical College (KMC) was recognised by the Medical Council of India in 1958, with the first graduating class. It also got recognition from the General Medical Council of Great Britain and the Malaysian Medical Council, within the next few months. The degrees awarded by the KMC are recognized in over 40 countries at present.
The Kasturba Medical College (KMC) has been providing education to the students and facilities for research work to the researchers, since its inception. The physical facilities, faculty research work and student amenities of the KMC have been steadily developed over the years and the college premise is built in an area of 200 acre for providing one of the finest environments for study in South Asia. The KMC offers various courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate level and all the courses are aimed at nurturing the young talents to become specialised medical practitioners.
The main undergraduate course that Kasturba Medical College (KMC) offers is MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). The Post-graduate courses offered by KMC include the Super speciality Courses, Post Graduate Degree Courses and Post Graduate Diploma Courses. The Super speciality Courses include M.Ch in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Genitourinary Surgery (Urology & Andrology), Neuro Surgery and Paediatric Surgery, and DM in Cardiology and Neurology. The Post Graduate Degree Courses offered by the Kasturba Medical College (KMC) include the Master of Surgery (MS) in Anatomy, General Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology and Orthopaedic Surgery; Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Anaesthesiology, Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, General Medicine, Hospital Administration, Microbiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, Radiotherapy, and Skin & VD.
Apart from these, the Kasturba Medical College (KMC) also offer some Post Graduate Diploma Courses. These courses include DA in Anaesthesiology, DLO in Otorhinolaryngology, DGO in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, DO in Ophthalmology, DCH in Paediatrics, DCP in Pathology, DPM in Psychiatry, DMRD in Radiodiagnosis, DMRT in Radiotherapy and DVD in Skin & VD. The duration of the DM/M.Ch/MD/ MS courses is three years and that of Diploma Courses is two years. This duration is regardless of any extra academic qualifications (like postgraduate Diploma) and professional experience (like senior house surgeoncy) that a candidate may possess. Apart from that, the duration of the MDS course is two years, subject to any revision by the Dental Council of India.
