Temple Sculpture of West Bengal flourished under the Pala dynasty.

The temple sculpture of West Bengal owes a lot to the Pala dynasty. One of the major features of its temple sculpture is the terracotta works. The histories of most of the temples existing in this East Indian state are steeped in legends. Apart from the architectural grandeur the temples of West Bengal are important pilgrimage centers as well.

Dakshineswar Kali Temple Of West Bengal, Indian Sculpture If one delves into the history of the temple sculpture of West Bengal, it would be easily revealed that the architectural movement in Orissa did have an impact on its temple building idiom as well. In the districts of Bankura and Burdwi beautiful ruins of ancient temple sculptures exist to this day. Apart from the Pala rulers the Bhanja rulers also encouraged temple architecture. But unfortunately only relics could be found as witnesses to the artistic brilliance of this age. Some of the recurring features of the temple sculpture of West Bengal are the terracotta reliefs, bamboo frameworks and bas reliefs. The regular architectural elements of these temples include double temple structure or `jor bangla,` use of bricks and laterite, lavish decorations and others. The influence of folk architecture is also apparent in the art and sculpture of West Bengal temples.
