Suta is said to be a generic term applicable for chronicles and bards.

Suta is considered to be a generic term used for records and bards. The bard and herald of the Hindus are attached to the state of all men of rank to recite their praises, celebrate their actions, and commemorate their ancestry.

Suta is also the name of a celebrated pupil of Vyasa, from whom he learned many historical and legendary traditions. It was to Suta that the great Muni Vyasa communicated the Puranas.
