Mamata Shankar is a celebrated performer in India, be it the field of acting or dance, she is probably the unmatched personality from Bengal who has created a different style of choreography and also acting all over the nation. Mamata Shankar is the sister of Ananda Shankar and the daughter of internationally famous danseuse Uday and Amala Shankar. She is also the niece of
Pandit Ravi Shankar. Mamata Shankar has attained boundless fame and popularity in the domains of acting, dancing and choreography. Mr. Chandrodoy Ghosh is her husband.

Mamata Shankar had her basic training in dance and choreography at the Uday Shankar India Culture Centre in Calcutta under the guidance of her mother. Mamata Shankar followed the footsteps of her father and took into her blood the rare sense of choreography, which always focused on innovation. For the expanse of 29 years Mamata Shankar has choreographed several dance-dramas and short dance items on extensive contemporary themes. Some of the notable are Tagore`s "Chandalika", "Kalmrigaya" "Horikhela", "Aajker Ekalabya", "Shikar", "Amritasya Putra", "Milap", "Prakriti", "Vasantotsav", and "Mother Earth".
Mamata Shankar was honored with several awards and recognitions from dance critics residing in foreign countries. As her father taught her to be innovative in whatever, she does, Mamata Shankar tries to convey her thoughts in an easy way to the people through her dances so that audience of all age will enjoy and will also get the message. Most of her dances aim at social awareness. She teaches almost 1700 students in her dance school and manages three dancing centers in Kolkata itself. Most of the acting career of Mamata Shankar is concentrated to art films or television serials; she hardly appeared in the commercial film industry.
Mamata Shankar prefers keeping her passion for dance and acting separate. Her son Ratul Shankar is an upcoming musician and also interested in acting. The mother-son duo could be seen in
Rituporno Ghosh`s Utsab. The Bengali TV serial ` Janmabhumi ` brought Mamata Shankar closer to her viewers. She is one of the fine artists of Bengal who was selected as protagonists in the films of director like Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen. Her astounding performance are like assets to the Bengali film industry.
