Hoysala sculpture emerged in Karnataka and thrived under the royal patronage. Numerous temples were built in the Hoysala Empire that speaks volumes about the artistic wizardry. The sculptures are mainly found on the temples. These are colossal buildings with mandapas, garbhagrihas and vimanas.
The features of Hoysala sculpture comprise of intricate stone work and several relief work. The predominant motifs found on the temple walls include the deities of gods and goddesses and animals. Thick foliage sculptures are also present on these temples. The friezes follow a set pattern and throughout the temple walls. The ceilings of the mandapas are designed with prolific sculptures. Another interesting architectural element is the gopuram. The huge gateways are decorated with well carved sculptures.
