Salya Surgery is the art of extracting extraneous substances like grass, wood, earth, metal and stone violently or accidentally introduced into the human body. Salya is the treatment of the inflammation and suppuration thereby induced. Salya means a dart or arrow, and points clearly to the origin of this branch of Hindu science. Dhanwantari says that Salya is the first and best of the medical sciences less liable than any other to the fallacies of conjectural and inferential practice. The Salya is pure in itself, perpetual in its applicability, the worthy produce of heaven and certain source of fame. It is thus clear that Surgery was once extensively cultivated and highly valued by the Hindus.
