The toppers in the zone were the Orissa, Assam and Bengal teams with the highest points.

The East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 2000-01 saw the participation of all the 5 regular teams that were playing in the tournament for the previous several editions. Mainly representing different states from the Eastern region of India, the teams showed some very good cricketing performances in the most popular and fruitful domestic cricket tournament of India. The East Zone teams included the likes of Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Bihar and Orissa and they played against each other with the same objective of becoming one of the top three teams in the zone. The teams also tried their best for securing a berth in the knock out level of the tournament. The teams like Orissa, Assam and Bengal were the successful teams of the East Zone that eventually entered into the Super League stage of the Ranji Trophy, 2000-01. The teams earned the highest points from the zonal level league matches. The total earnings of the Orissa, Assam and Bengal were 29, 19 and 18 points, respectively, at the end of the zonal level league matches.

The East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2000-01 started with the match between the teams of Bengal and Tripura and the two teams played the match at Calcutta from 19-22 November, 2000. The Bengal team got a good start in the tournament, as it won the match with a margin of an innings and 134 runs for earning 8 points from it. The Tripura team remained pointless in the match. The Bihar and Orissa teams played against each other in the second match of the East Zone and the match was held at Jamshedpur from 19-22 November, 2000. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the Orissa and Bihar teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match. The Bihar team appeared in the third match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Tripura team at Jamshedpur from 26-29 November, 2000. The match was also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Bihar and Tripura teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match.

The Assam and Bengal teams met with each other in the fourth of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2000-01 and the match took place at Maligaon from 26-29 November, 2000. The drawn match saw the Bengal team earning 5 points and Assam earning 3 points from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Tripura and Assam and the match was held at Agartala from 14-17 December, 2000. The Assam team played very well in the match for clinching a victory of an innings and 92 runs to earn 8 points and the Tripura team failed to earn any points from the match. The Tripura team then played against the Orissa team in the next match of the zone and the match was organised at Agartala from 22-25 December, 2000. The winner of the match was the Orissa team with a wonderful margin of an innings and 156 runs and the team also earned 8 points from the match. However, the Tripura team could not earn even a single point from the match.

In the seventh of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2000-01, the teams of Assam and Bihar played against each other at Tinsukia from 22-25 December, 2000. The match was won by the Assam team with a good margin of an innings and 10 runs for earning 8 points and the Bihar team failed to earn any points from the match. The Orissa and Bengal teams then met with each other in the next match of the East Zone and the two teams played the match at Calcutta from 28-31 December, 2000. The Orissa team showed a wonderful performance in the match for clinching a victory of 129 runs to earn 8 points and the Bengal team remained pointless in the match. The Bengal team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Bihar team at Calcutta from 03-06 January, 2001. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the Bengal and Bihar teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match. The last of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2000-01 involved the teams like Assam and Orissa and the two teams played the match at Tinsukia from 03-06 January, 2001. The match was won by the Orissa team with a huge margin of 9 wickets for earning 8 points and the Assam team failed to earn any points from the match.
