Jatin Pandit and his younger brother Lalit had formed a duo team in 1992 with the objective to compose unique music in Bollywood. They have composed songs for films including Khiladi, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Khamoshi and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Jatin-Lalit is their professional name, however in 2006, the brothers ended their professional relationship because of some personal problems; they work independently after 2006.
Jatin and Lalit were born in the family of Mewati gharana. They received their musical education at the primary stages from their father, Pratap Narayan. They were also taught guitar and piano by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
They started their career together in 1992, and their debut music composition was for the film Yaara Dildara. They came into prominence for their composition and soundtrack of the movie Khiladi and for the song "Pehla Nasha". This romantic song from the movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander is a loved melody till date. Their compositions are stoutly influenced by R. D. Burman`s style of music composing. Towards the second half of the nineties, they were considered as the best music directors in the Indian film industry.

The duo has worked with a number of well-known lyricists and singers including Javed Akhtar, Udit Narayan, Anand Bakshi and Kumar Sanu. During the last few years of their joint career, their music albums featured several songs composed by other musicians. This practice was not supported much by Jatin-Lalit; however, the producer and director insisted on this practice and carried on. In
Karan Johar`s Kabhi
Khushi Kabhie Gham Sandesh Shandilya composed two of the tracks. In Chalte Chalte, Aadesh Shrivastava included several songs. Also in Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Himesh Reshammiya and Sajid-Wajid composed one song.
Jatin Lalit started an amusing trend in Bollywood. They wrote songs performed by Bollywood film stars rather than playback singers. They specially composed "Ae kya bolti tu" in the film Ghulam for the lead actor Aamir Khan. They also composed a song for
Sanjay Dutt to sing in the movie Khoobsurat. Jatin also appeared in the movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar during the song "Diwane Hum Pyar Ke". He also performed the song, "Ruth Ke Hamse Kabhi" in the film.
Jatin-Lalit was appointed as honorable judges in the Zee Television musical show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and also on another musical show, Star Voice of India. After producing unforgettable music for almost 16 years together, they announced that they would part ways in 2006, due to some personal problems. Lately, the duo composed a few songs together for the film, Mr. White Mr. Black.
In 2006, the duo of Jatin Lalit won a Filmfare Award for their song "Chand Sifarish" from `Fanaa`. On-line voters on the BBC Asian Network judged their soundtrack of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge the top Hindi soundtrack of all time.
