Rituparno Ghosh, often hailed as the rightful heir of Satyajit Ray, is one of the most talented Indian directors.

Rituparno Ghosh is one of the contemporary Bengali directors in India. Starting his career in the year 1992 the well admired director has been recognised for his works worldwide. Rituparno Ghosh was born and brought up in Kolkata. He studied at South Point High School and later joined Jadavpur University to pursue his education in economics. Both his parents were closely associated with filmdom. His father was a documentary filmmaker. Rituparno Ghosh has always professed that he has admired the woks of Ingmar Bergman, Krzysztof Kie?lowski, Bille August, Quentin Tarantino, Abbas Kiarostami, Jafar Panahi, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Wong Kar-wai, and Pedro Almodóvar.

Rituparno Ghosh, Indian Movie Director The first directorial venture of Rituparno Ghosh was Hirer Angti (The Diamond Ring) in 1992. However as a novice he had also explored the world of advertisement. But the film that shot Rituparno Ghosh to fame, two years later, was his second film, Unishe April (19th April). The film dealt with mother-daughter relationship. The film starred Aparna Sen, Debashree Roy, Deepankar Dey and Prasenjit appeared in a small role. Unishe April won the 1995 National Film Award in the Best Film category.

Most of the films of Rituparno Ghosh deal with women. His third film Dahan (1997) presented a modern society which is always repressing women even when they ardently want to fight for their rights. This flick too was critically appreciated. Another feature of Ghosh`s films is his cultural influence. The influences of Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray are apparent in his films. After Ray he is one of the few filmmakers who can use the songs from Tagore delightfully in his films.

The sensitivity, passion and intellect with which he makes his films are well rewarded by awards. Apart from the National Film Awards, the films of Rituparno Ghosh are quite popular in the international film festivals too.
