The Baroda, Mumbai and Maharashtra teams were the highest point getters in the West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98.

There were 5 teams played against each other under the West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 and all the teams were the regular participants of the tournament. The teams were mainly representing different states from the Western region of India in the premium domestic cricket tournament of India. The teams included the likes of Mumbai, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Baroda and Saurashtra and all of them gave their best efforts to become one of the top three teams in the zone. The teams also had the intention of securing a berth in the Super League stage of the tournament, however, only the teams like Baroda, Mumbai and Maharashtra eventually did so from the West Zone. The teams earned the highest points from the zonal level league matches to enter into the Super League stage of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98.

The first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 was played between the teams of Gujarat and Mumbai and the two teams played the match at Valsad from 06-09 November, 1997. The Mumbai team got a very good start in the tournament, as it won the match by a very good margin of an innings and 68 runs to earn 8 points. The Gujarat team failed to earn any points from the match. The second match of the West Zone saw the teams of Saurashtra and Baroda playing against each other at Rajkot from 06-09 November, 1997. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Baroda and Saurashtra teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The Mumbai and Maharashtra teams met with each other in the third match of the West Zone and the match was held at Mumbai from 16-19 November, 1997. The Mumbai team earned 8 points from the match by clinching a huge victory of 311 runs and the Maharashtra team remained pointless in the match.

The Saurashtra team played against the Gujarat team in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 and the match was held at Rajkot from 16-19 November, 1997. The Saurashtra team clinched a victory of 6 wickets in the match for earning 8 points and the Gujarat team failed to earn any points from the match. The Baroda and Mumbai teams played against each other in the next match of the zone, which took place at Vadodara from 30 November-03 December, 1997. The drawn match saw the Baroda and Mumbai teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Gujarat and Maharashtra and the match was held at Ahmedabad from 30 November-03 December, 1997. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Maharashtra and Gujarat teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match.

The seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 saw the teams of Baroda and Gujarat playing against each other at Vadodara from 30 December, 1997 - 02 January, 1998. The Baroda team clinched a victory of an innings and 1 runs in the match for earning 8 points from the match and the Gujarat team remained pointless in the match. Then, the teams of Maharashtra and Saurashtra met with each other in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Pune from 30 December, 1997 - 02 January, 1998. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra and Saurashtra teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Maharashtra and Baroda and the match was organised at Pune from 06-09 January, 1998. The winner of the match was the Maharashtra team with a margin of 180 runs for earning 8 points; however, the Saurashtra team could not earn even a single point from the match. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 was played between the teams of Mumbai and Saurashtra and the two teams played the match at Mumbai from 07-10 January, 1998. The Mumbai and Saurashtra teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.
