The North Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 was topped by the Delhi, Haryana and Punjab teams.

The 6 teams that participated under the North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 were mainly coming from the Northern region of India, representing various states from that region. The Ranji Trophy has already established itself as one of the most popular domestic cricket tournaments in all over the world. All the North Zone teams in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 were the regular participants in the tournament and they included the likes of Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Services and Punjab. The teams gave their best efforts t claim one of the top three spots in the zone and they also tried for securing a berth in the Super League stage of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98. However, only the teams like Delhi, Haryana and Punjab eventually became successful to do so from the zone, as they earned the highest points from the zonal level league matches.

The Delhi and Haryana teams played against each other in the first of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 and the match was held at Delhi from 19-22 October, 1997. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Delhi and Haryana teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match. The second match of the zone was played between the teams of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir and the two teams played the match at Una from 19-22 October, 1997. The Himachal Pradesh team earned 5 points and Jammu & Kashmir earned 3 points from the drawn match. The third match of the zone saw the Punjab and Services teams playing against each other at Mohali from 19-22 October, 1997. The winner of the match was the Punjab team with a very good margin of an innings and 54 runs and the team also earned 8 points from the match. However, the Services team failed to earn any points from the match.

The match between the teams of Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir was the fourth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 and the match was held at Faridabad from 26-29 October, 1997. Playing very well in the match, the Haryana team clinched a huge victory of 9 wickets for earning 8 points and the Jammu & Kashmir team remained pointless in the match. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and the two teams played the match at Mohali from 26-29 October, 1997. The match was won by the Punjab team with a huge margin of 9 wickets to earn 8 points and the Himachal Pradesh team failed to earn any points from the match. The Delhi team then played against the Services team in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Delhi from 26-29 October, 1997. The Delhi team won the match with a very good margin of an innings and 30 runs for earning 8 points and the Services team remained pointless in the match.

The teams of Himachal Pradesh and Services met with each other in the seventh of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 and the match took place at Sunder Nagar from 02-05 November, 1997. The match saw the Himachal Pradesh team winning by a margin of 6 wickets to earn 8 points and it also saw the Services team remaining pointless. The Punjab and Delhi teams then played against each other in the next match of the zone and the two teams played the match at Patiala from 02-05 November, 1997. The Punjab and Delhi teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match. The next match of the zone saw the Haryana and Services teams playing against each other at Faridabad from 09-12 November, 1997. The Haryana team won the match with a margin of an innings and 2 runs for earning 8 points and the Services team failed to earn any points from the match.

The tenth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 was played between the teams of Himachal Pradesh and Delhi and the match was held at Una from 09-12 November, 1997. The match officials declared the match as an abandoned one, due to some unavoidable reasons, without even the toss being made. The officials awarded both the Himachal Pradesh and Delhi teams 2 points, each for the abandoned match. The Punjab team then played against the Jammu & Kashmir team in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Jullundur from 09-12 November, 1997. This match was also declared as abandoned without even the toss was made and the Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir teams earned 2 points, each from the abandoned match. The teams of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh played against each other in the next match of the zone, which was held at Gurgaon from 16-18 November, 1997. The Haryana team earned 8 points from the match by clinching a victory of an innings and 115 runs and the Himachal Pradesh team remained pointless in the match.

The match between the teams of Services and Jammu & Kashmir was the next match of the North Zone and the match was held at Delhi from 16-18 November, 1997. The Services team clinched a victory of an innings and 185 runs in the match to earn 8 points and the Jammu & Kashmir team failed to earn any points from the match. Then, the teams of Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir met with each other in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Delhi from 23-26 November, 1997. The Jammu & Kashmir teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the specified period of time. The last of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 involved the teams like Haryana and Punjab and the two teams played the match at Gurgaon from 23-26 November, 1997. The Punjab and Haryana teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.
