The Karnataka team clinched the championship title in Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 by beating Uttar Pradesh in the drawn Final.

The knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 saw the participation of the top 6 teams from the Super League stage, including the likes of Hyderabad, Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka and Mumbai. The teams played very well in the Super League stage of India`s premium domestic cricket tournament and then they competed with each other in the knock out matches of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 for the coveted championship title. All the teams gave their best efforts to do well while playing in the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final match of the tournament and tried hard to win the title. However, it was the Karnataka team that eventually became successful to win the championship title by beating the Uttar Pradesh team in the closely contested Final.

The teams of Bengal and Hyderabad played against each other in the first Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 and the two teams played the match at Hyderabad from 30 March-03 April, 1998. The match saw the Hyderabad team winning by a good margin of 44 runs for getting into the Semi-Final stage of the tournament. The second Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 saw the teams of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh playing against each other at Kanpur from 30 March-03 April, 1998. The winner of the match was the Uttar Pradesh team with a very good margin of an innings and 34 runs and the team also got the permission to play in the Semi-Final stage of the tournament.

The Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh teams played against each other in the first Semi-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 and the match was held at Mumbai from 09-12 April, 1998. The match saw a very close contest between the two teams and the Uttar Pradesh team eventually became successful to clinch a narrow victory of only 3 wickets in the match to reach the Final of the tournament. The teams of Hyderabad and Karnataka played against each other in the second Semi-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 and the match took place at Hyderabad from 09-13 April, 1998. The Karnataka team played well in the closely contested match and clinched a narrow victory of only 1 wicket to set up a Final clash with the Uttar Pradesh team. Thus, the teams of Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka locked their horns together in the Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 and the two teams played the match at Bangalore from 19-23 March, 1998. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials declared the Karnataka team as the winner of the match and also the championship title, as it was having a lead in the first innings of the Final match.
