The top three teams in the zone were the Bombay, Baroda and Maharashtra for entering into the knock out level.

5 teams played against each other under the West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96, the premium domestic cricket tournament in India. All the teams were the regular participants in the tournament and most of them were mainly representing different states from the Western region of India. The teams included the likes of Maharashtra, Bombay, Gujarat, Baroda and Saurashtra and the sole objective of all the teams was to claim the top spot in the West Zone. The teams also tried their best to secure a birth in the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96, however, only the Bombay, Baroda and Maharashtra teams could do so from the zone. The Bombay team earned total of 16 points, Baroda earned 6 points and the Maharashtra team earned 3 points, at the end of the zonal level league matches.

The Maharashtra team played against the Baroda team in the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 and the match was held at Pune from 13-16 December, 1995. The Maharashtra team earned 2 points from the drawn match for having a lead in the first innings and the Baroda team remained pointless in the match. The Gujarat and Bombay teams met with each other in the second match of the zone and the match took place at Bulsar from 13-16 December, 1995. The winner of the match was the Bombay team with a margin of an innings and 110 runs and the team earned 6 points from the match. The Gujarat team failed to earn any points from the match. The third match of the West Zone was played between the teams of Baroda and Bombay and the two teams played the match at Baroda from 21-24 December, 1995. The Bombay team played very well in this match also and clinched a victory of 5 wickets for earning 6 points. The Baroda team remained pointless in the match.

The Baroda team appeared in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 also and this time, it played against the Saurashtra team at Rajkot from 09-12 January, 1996. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Saurashtra team 2 points for the match, as it had a lead in the first innings. However, the Baroda team could not earn any points from the match. The next match of the West Zone involved the teams like Bombay and Maharashtra and the match was held at Thane from 10-13 January, 1996. The Bombay team earned 2 points from the drawn match, as it was leading the Maharashtra team in the first innings of the match. Then, the teams of Bombay and Saurashtra played against each other in the next match of the zone, which took place at Thane form 17-20 January, 1996. The drawn match saw the Bombay team earning 2 points from it, for having a lead in the first innings.

The match between the teams of Gujarat and Maharashtra was the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 and the two teams played the match at Ahmedabad from 17-20 January, 1996. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded both the Maharashtra and Gujarat teams 1 point, each for the match. The next match of the zone was played between the teams of Saurashtra and Gujarat and the match was held at Rajkot from 21-24 January, 1996. The drawn match saw the Gujarat team earning 2 points on the basis of its first innings lead and the Saurashtra team remaining pointless. Then, the Maharashtra team played against the Saurashtra team in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Pune from 25-28 January, 1996. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded both the Maharashtra and Saurashtra teams 2 points, each for the match. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 saw the teams of Baroda and Gujarat playing against each other at Baroda from 25-28 January, 1996. The Baroda team played very well in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 25 runs for earning 6 points from the match. However, the Gujarat team failed to earn any points from the match.
