The Orissa, Bengal and Assam teams entered into the knock out level from this zone.

The East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 saw the participation of 5 teams, all the regular participants of the tournament. The Ranji Trophy has earned a lot of recognition and fame for being the premium domestic cricket tournament in India. All the teams were representing various states from the Eastern region of India and they included the likes of Tripura, Orissa, Assam, Bengal and Bihar. All the teams played against each other with the same objective of becoming one of the top three teams in the zone. Getting a chance to compete in the knock out level of the tournament was also another principal objective of the teams. However, only the teams like Orissa, Bengal and Assam could eventually became successful to enter into the knock out level from the East Zone. The Orissa, Bengal and Assam teams earned total of 20, 18 and 8 points, respectively from the zonal level league matches.

The teams of Bihar and Tripura played against each other in the first of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 and the match was held at Agartala from 11-12 December, 1995. The match was won by the Bihar team with a very good margin of an innings and 45 runs and the team also earned 6 points from the match. The Tripura team failed to earn any points from the match. The Orissa and Bengal teams met with each other in the second match of the zone and the two teams played the match at Baripada from 11-14 December, 1995. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Orissa team 2 points for the match, as it was having a lead in the first innings. The Bengal team remained pointless in the match. The third match of the East Zone was played between the teams of Assam and Tripura and the match took place at Guwahati from 20-23 December, 1995. The Assam team played very well in the match for earning 6 points by clinching a victory of an innings and 188 runs. The Tripura team could not earn even a single point from the match.

The match between the teams of Bihar and Bengal was the fourth of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 and the match was held at Patna from 20-23 December, 1995. The winner of the match was the Bengal team with a very good margin of an innings and 90 runs and the team earned 6 points from the match. The match saw the Bihar team remaining pointless in it. The Orissa and Tripura teams played against each other in the next match of the zone, which took place at Cuttack from 06-09 January, 1996. The Orissa team earned 6 points from the match by clinching a victory of an innings and 209 runs and the Tripura team failed to earn any points from the match. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Bihar and Assam and the two teams played the match at Jamshedpur from 06-09 January, 1996. The Bihar team earned 2 points from the match, as it was having a lead in the first innings of the drawn match. The Assam team remained pointless in the match.

The seventh of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 saw the teams of Orissa and Assam plying against each other at Cuttack from 14-17 January, 1996. The match saw the Orissa team winning by a very good margin of an innings and 93 runs for earning 6 points. The match also saw the Assam team remaining pointless in it. The teams of Tripura and Assam were involved in the next match of the zone, which took place at Agartala from 14-17 January, 1996. The Bengal team won the match with a wonderful margin of an innings and 351 runs for earning 6 points and the Tripura team failed to earn any points from the match. The Orissa team then played against the Bihar team in the next match of the zone and the match was organised at Balasore from 22-25 January, 1996. The winner of the match was the Orissa team with a very good margin of 8 wickets and the team also earned 6 points from the match. The Bihar team could not earn any points from the match. The last of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 was played between the teams of Bengal and Assam and the two teams played the match at Krishnanagar from 22-25 January, 1996. Playing wonderfully in the match, the Bengal team clinched a huge victory of 9 wickets for earning 6 points and the Assam team remained pointless in the match.
