The Madhya Pradesh, Railways and Vidarbha teams claimed the top three spots in the zone.

The Central Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 had 5 teams, all the regular participants of the tournament. The tournament is considered to be the premium domestic cricket tournament in India and the Central zone teams were mainly representing different states from the Central region of India, in the tournament. The teams included the likes of Madhya Pradesh, Railways, Vidarbha, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and they competed with each other very hard for claiming the top spots in the zone. The main objective of all the teams were to become one of the top three teams in the zone so that they could enter into the knock out level of the tournament, for vying for the championship title. However, the teams like Madhya Pradesh, Railways and Vidarbha eventually got into the knock out level with total of 16, 8 and 6 points, respectively from the zonal level league matches.

The Central Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 started with the match between the teams of Madhya Pradesh and Railways and the match was held at Gwalior from 10-13 December, 1995. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Madhya Pradesh team 2 points for the match, as it was having a lead in the first innings. The second match of the zone saw the teams of Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha playing against each other at Kanpur from 10-13 December, 1995. The match also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Uttar Pradesh team earned 2 points from the match for having a lead in the first innings. The teams of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan played against each other in the third match of the zone and the match took place at Udaipur from 18-21 December, 1995. The winner of the match was the Madhya Pradesh team with a huge margin of 9 wickets for earning 6 points and the Rajasthan team failed to earn even a single point from the match.

The match between the teams of Vidarbha and Railways was the fourth of the Central Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 and the two teams played the match at Nagpur from 18-21 December, 1995. The Vidarbha team earned 2 points from the drawn match on the basis of its first innings lead. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Uttar Pradesh and Railways and the match took place at Delhi from 05-08 January, 1996. The Railways team earned 6 points from the match by clinching a victory of 6 wickets and the Uttar Pradesh team remained pointless in the match. The Rajasthan and Vidarbha teams then played against each other in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Jaipur from 05-08 January, 1996. The match saw the Rajasthan team winning by a narrow margin of 20 runs for earning 6 points and the Vidarbha team remaining pointless.

The seventh of the Central Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 was played between the teams of Railways and Rajasthan and the match was organised at Delhi from 13-16 January, 1996. The Railways team earned 2 points from the drawn match, as it was leading Rajasthan team in the first innings of the match. The next match of the zone saw the Madhya Pradesh team playing against the Uttar Pradesh team at Bhilai from 13-16 January, 1996. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Madhya Pradesh team earned 2 points from it for having a lead in the first innings. The Madhya Pradesh team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Vidarbha team at Nagpur from 22-25 January, 1996. The Madhya Pradesh team played very well in the match for earning 6 points by clinching a victory of 4 wickets, however, the Vidarbha team failed to earn any points from the match. The last of the Central Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 involved the teams like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and the two teams played the match at Lucknow from 22-25 January, 1996. The match also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Uttar Pradesh team 2 points from the match, as it had a lead in the first innings. The Rajasthan team could not earn any points from the match.
