There was no change in the team list of the West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, as all the regular 5 teams participated in the tournament, like the past several editions. The tournament is one of the most popular and fruitful domestic cricket tournaments in India and most of the teams that played against each other in the West Zone were representing different states from the Western region of India. The teams included the likes of Saurashtra, Bombay, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Baroda and all of them tried their best to become one of the top two teams in the zone. The teams also gave their best efforts to secure a berth in the knock out level of the tournament. The Bombay and Maharashtra teams earned the highest points from the zonal level league matches and they also eventually became successful to enter into the knock out level of the tournament.

The match between the teams of Gujarat and Bombay was the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the two teams played the match at Surat from 06-09 December, 1991. The drawn match saw the Bombay and Gujarat teams earning 20 and 7 points, respectively from it. The second match of the zone was played between the teams of Saurashtra and Baroda and the match was held at Rajkot from 06-09 December, 1991. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Saurashtra and Baroda teams 15 and 9 points, respectively for the match. The Bombay and Saurashtra teams then played against each other in the third match of the zone and the match took place at Bombay from 13-16 December, 1991. The Bombay and Saurashtra teams earned 19 and 12 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the specified period of time.

The teams of Gujarat and Maharashtra played against each other in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match was held at Valsad from 13-16 December, 1991. The Maharashtra team played wonderfully in the match for clinching a huge victory of 9 wickets to earn 21 points and the Gujarat team also earned 5 points from the match. The Maharashtra team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Saurashtra team at Pune from 20-23 December, 1991. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Maharashtra and Saurashtra teams 16 and 9 points, respectively for the match. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Baroda and Bombay and the match took place at Baroda from 20-23 December, 1991. The drawn match saw the Baroda team earning 16 points and Bombay earning 11 points from it.

The teams of Maharashtra and Baroda played against each other in the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match was played at Kolhapur form 27-30 December, 1991. The match saw the Maharashtra team winning by 6 wickets for earning 17 points and the Baroda team also earned 7 points from the match. The next match of the zone saw the Saurashtra and Gujarat teams playing against each other at Rajkot from 27-30 December, 1991. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Saurashtra and Gujarat teams 17 and 13 points, respectively for the match. The Bombay team then played against the Maharashtra team in the next match of the West Zone and the two teams played the match at Bombay from 02-05 January, 1992. The winner of the match was the Bombay team with a very good margin of an innings and 85 runs and the team earned 22 points from the match. Then Maharashtra team earned 5 points from the match, as well. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 was played between the teams of Baroda and Gujarat and the match was held at Baroda from 03-06 January, 1992. The Baroda and Gujarat teams earned 14 and 11 points, respectively from the drawn match.
