The Delhi team won the championship title by beating Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy Final on first innings lead.

All the top two teams from each of the five zones in the tournament got the permission to compete in the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, the premium domestic cricket tournament in India. The teams did play in their respective zones first and they got the chance for playing in knock out level, as they earned the highest points in their respective zones. The teams competed with each other in the knock out matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 for the championship title and they included the likes of Maharashtra, Bihar, Hyderabad, Madhya Pradesh, Bombay, Delhi, Bengal, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. They played against each other in the Pre-Quarter-Finals, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final of the tournament and the Delhi team eventually became successful to claim the championship title.

The Maharashtra and Bihar teams played against each other in the first Pre-Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match was held at Pune from 13-17 February, 1992. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials allowed the Maharashtra team to advance to the Quarter-Final stage of the tournament. The second Pre-Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 saw the teams of Hyderabad and Madhya Pradesh playing against each other at Secunderabad from 15-19 February, 1992. The Madhya Pradesh team played very well in the match and clinched a victory of 7 wickets for entering into the Quarter-Finals of the tournament.

The match between the teams of Bombay and Madhya Pradesh was the first Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the two teams played the match at Bombay from 28 February-03 March, 1992. The Bombay team entered into the Semi-Final stage of the tournament, by winning this match with a very good margin of an innings and 118 runs. The teams of Delhi and Bengal played against each other in the second Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match was held at Delhi from 28 February-03 March, 1992. Playing very well in the match, the Delhi team beat Bengal by a good margin of an innings and 171 runs and got the permission to play in the Semi-Finals of the tournament. The Maharashtra and Haryana teams met with each other in the third Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match took place at Pune from 28 February-03 March, 1992. Though the match remained drawn during the stipulated duration, the match officials allowed the Haryana team to advance to the Semi-Finals of the tournament. The last and fourth Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 was played between the teams of Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh and the match was held at Kanpur from 28 February-03 March, 1992. The match also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Tamil Nadu team got the permission to play in the Semi-Final stage of the tournament.

The teams of Tamil Nadu and Haryana played against each other in the first Semi-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match was held at Faridabad from 13-17 March, 1992. The drawn match saw the Tamil Nadu team getting the required permission for entering into the Final of the tournament. The second Semi-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 involved the teams like Delhi and Bombay and the two teams played the match at Bombay from 13-17 March, 1992. The match officials allowed the Delhi team to enter into the Final and clash with the Tamil Nadu team, though the match remained drawn during the specified period of time. Thus, the teams of Delhi and Tamil Nadu locked their horns together in the Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match was organised at Delhi from 27-31 March, 1992. The Delhi team once again became the champion of the tournament, by winning the Final match for having a lead in the first innings of the match.
